POLITICAL TRADITION UPSET BY SNELL VICTORY In a strange interlude in Oregon’s political history a governor has been ousted from office at a time when interest in politics was almost non-existant. Political tradition has held for many years that when there is a lack o f interest in on elec tion. the ins stay in and the outs stay out. How ever. Earl Snell has overcome that tradition and has defated Governor Charles Sprague for the republican nomination. Mr. Snell won the election, probably be‘ cause of his keenness as a politician, his ability and his popularity with organized groups. He is a good politician, although he does not give the appearance of making a conscious effort to win votes. In the govern orshop race, the voters o f Oregon had on apportunity to vote for and against two o f the ablest men seeking the office in several years. Both men are capable, honest and morally fit. Governor Sprague has given Oregon an efficient administration and this paper predicts that Earl Snell will make an outstanding record as governor, if he over comes the democratic nominee in November. BEET PHILOSOPHY Philosophy can be developed even in a beet field. In his Sunday sermon Rev. M. H. Green lee recalled that a few days ago he assisted in thinning beets on the Lions club beet project and stated that no person with the philosophi cal turn of mind should attempt to thin beets. The minister found it difficult to decide which beet to allow to live and after he had decided and had pulled up all o f the plants around the fortunate beet he was puzzled as to whether he should not have jerked it and permitted some other to remain in the ground. Rev. Greenlee illustrated his point effect ively but he did not mention that it is sorrowful that many young beet plants must be elimin ated that one plant may grow to be a strong, healthy beet Is that not also the case with humans? It may not be necessary, but today the world is eliminating many young men that the remaind er may live in comfort and develop naturally. Thousands o f young men are dying that the idea o f democracy and freedom may live and grow. Christ came, he lived and he died— that others might live. Perhaps some men. too. will always be called upon to play the roles o f those who lay down their lives for others. If that is their mission here on earth, may God bless them.
