The sta te Depart ment said German consulates were ordered closed because their activi ties had become contrary to the welfare of this country. The Justice Department instruct ed customs officials and immigra tion officers to prevent Germans from evading the order freezing German assets by leaving the coun try. The Secretary also re ported cost of living In large cities rose 0.7 per cent between mid-April and mid-May, making an Increase in living costs of moderate-Income j families of 2.4 per cent since June, j 1940, and 4.4 per cent since August, 1939, with food costs more than 5 per cent higher Ihan a year ago. and 9 per cent higher than two years ago. AGRICULTURE Agriculture Secretary Wickard is sued a statemene that “to date we have been able to buy only half the amount of cheese we wanted by the end of June (for lend-lease activi ties) and less than two-thirds of the amount of evaporated milk. The output has increased but we need more.” Mr. Wickard said increased prices for milk going into cheese and evaporated milk, supported by Gov ernment purchases, should yield farmers a higher return than any other dairy product. Speaking at Syracuse, N. Y., Mr. Wickard said the food situation in Europe is such that if the war con- tinues for a long time the issue may finally be "who can feed the people, the democracies or tlft dictatorships? Therefore food reserves may be more important than munitions reserves.” OIL President Roosevelt placed all pet roleum products under export licen sing control. Defense Petroleum Co ordinator Ickes, working to overcome the shortage of oil on the East Coast due to shortage of transport facilities, requested oil shippers not to sell petrolium products for foreign shipment without consultation with him. He also ordered Customs offic ials to halt the shipment of 240,000 gallons of oil from Philidelphia to Japan in order to conserve oil in that area. The Maritime Commission an nounced no American owned or con trolled tankers are carying oil to Germany. Italy or Japan. Price and Civilian Supply Administrator Hen derson asked petroleum refiners not to raise prices without prior con sultation with his office. The Census Bureau reported that if the 30,000,000 American motorists would reduce their driving speed 20 per cent, the annual saving in gaso line consumption would amount to 4.6000,000,000 gallons. AIR Assistant Secretary of War Lov ett, in a radio address, said “within a year we shall be geared to turn out 50.000 planes a year for as long as the emergency lasts." Mr. Lovett said the Air Corps is increasing the number of pilots in training from 12.000 to 30,000 a year and the num ber of mechanics from 45.000 to more than 100,000. He said the Air Corps is already nearly one-fourth of the entire Army and only the Infantry is larger. ARMY The War Department announced trainees will be permitted to volun teer as parachute troops. Heretofore, only Regular Army soldiers were chosen. The Department authorized construction of field houses at 25 Army posts to provide facilities for basketball, boxing and wrestling and other indoor sports. Baker Distributors ORDINANCE NO. 275 AN ORDINANCE PROHIBITING THE SALE OR DISPOSAL OF FIREWORKS FOR CERTAIN TIMES: PROHIBITING THE SHOOTING OF FIREWORKS WITHIN THE CITY LIMITS EX CEPTING FOR CERTAIN DAYS AND WITHIN CERTAIN DISTRICTS AND PROVIDING A PEN ALTY FOR THE VIOLATION OF THIS ORDI NANCE. THE PEOPLE OF NYSSA ORDAIN : Section 1. It shall henceforth be unlawful for any person, firm or corporation within the City of Nys sa to sell or distribute to the public for money or any thing of value, any firecrackers, rockets, torpedoes, roman candles or any other articles containing ex plosives commonly known as Fireworks, excepting that such fireworks may be sold and distributed be tween the 27th day of June 1941 and the 5th day of July 1941, both dates inclusive. Section 2. It shall henceforth be unlawful for any person to shoot, discharge or cause to explode with in the City of Nyssa, any article commonly known as Fireworks, which term shall be taken to include, crackers, rockets, roman candles and torpedoes Provided however, that between June 27th 1941 and July 5th 1941, both dates inclusive it shall be lawful to shoot and discharge fireworks within said City at places other than on Main Street between First Street East and Fourth Street, West. Section 3. Any person who shall violate any one of the provisions of this Ordinance shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor and upon conviction there of shall be punished by a fine of not less than five dollars or more than fifty dollars.
