September 8, 1934 the luxury liner Moro
O n Castle
caught fire and burned off the New
Jersey coast. The halocaust claimed 134 lives
and throughout the civilized world, the disaster
was viewed with dismay. But during the first
six months in the state of Oregon, traffic acci­
dents claimed a toll of 160 human lives and com­
paratively few persons took any notice of the
loss, according to Earl Snell, secretary of State,
in summarizing the accident situation in the
state for the first half of 1940.
As automobiles plunged, crashed and hurtl­
ed the 160 persons to their deaths, they injured
approximately 2,500 and caused thousands of
dollars worth of property damage. There were
several accidents in which two persons were
killed, a few in which three met death and in
some, as high as twelve persons were injured.
Fatal accidents during the first six months of the
year varied from a car turning over at a speed of
less than 25 miles an hour to an auto which roll­
ed and skidded for approximately 600 feet and
then hurtled the driver another 50 feet when it
went out of control while traveling 100 miles an
hour.”
About all that we could add to the above
remarks of Secretary Snell is—drive as if every
other motorist on the highway is a raving mani­
ac. And even then it may not save you.

MOULD
Republican party has fulfilled its obli­

to the nation by nominating Wendell
Willkie for President. It was a universal hope
that this year the convention would be free of
pressure groups, free of “back room” influence,
and free of machine control. That hope has
been fully realized. Mr. Willkie is that rare
individual, a candidate without commitments.
He refuses to temper his views in the slightest
to the political winds. He was completely frank
as to his position on every issue, and never stoop­
ed to evasion or took refuge in silence. He was,
in the best sense of the word, a people’s candi­
date—a man whose support came from the aver­
age men and women of America, not from polit­
ical bosses with their eyes fixed on jobs and
power and patronage.
The record of Wendell Willkie is one of
which every American, no matter what his par­
tisan allegiance, can be proud. It is the typically
American story of the man who, starting from
humble beginnings, succeeds through his own
work, his own abilities, his own girts of mind
and character and personality. Mr. Willkie,
like so many of our industrial and governmental
leaders, came up the hard way. He knows the
real America the America of modest homes,
the America whose faith in democratic processes
has never been shaken, the America which re­
veres our traditional liberties above all else.
The great principles for which Wendell
Willkie stands are the principles of liberalism—
“the faith that is America.” He has made many
speeches and written many articles. And all of
them, basically, deal with one issue. That issue
is the American way of life. It is the age-long
issue of man against the state—of liberty fight­
ing for its life against some kind of collectivism.
What Wendell Willkie abhors most is dictator­
ship—no matter what form it appeal's in, or what
honeyed words are used to conceal its true mean­
ing and intent. And he is one of the fortunate
few with a personality which makes it possible
for him to o dramatize his convictions.
Mr. Willkie is a candidate in the finest
American mould—a candidate with greatness
of mind and heart and spirit.
