Withing the last two weeks it has been brought to our attention again that there is a real need for such an association. This was brought about through the many farmers (an unsuspected number, up until now) who have been marketing strawberries. Had these straw berry growers had a marketing association they could have taken advantage of San Francisco market which has been depleted, so we are told, of strawberries, due to the “in between season’’ of the California crop. What an opportunity it would have been for our Malheur county farmers! We believe that not only could they have disposed of whatever surplus crop there was, but could have received a good price for the crop, for no district that we have had the pleas ure of living in have we bought strawberries that had a better appearance nor more palatibil- ity. A higher altitude plus the good husbandry of our average farmer will spell success in the strawberry crop—with the inevitable “if”—if a suitable and efficient marketing association can be developed. OUR PLANNING COMMISSION— city planning commission has taken on T HE a spurt of life again. A committee from that body has been appointed to make recom mendations to the city council on a zoning ord inance. And contrary to the opinion of some, the recommendation of the planning commis sion IS NOT binding on the council—for the council has the final say—any part of the rec ommendation can he disregarded or amended as the council sees fit. Whatever recommendations that will be made and finally promulgated by the council will not satisfy everone in Nyssa. But we are a growing city and the need for some restrictions on buildings must be made if we are not to have a hodge podge of shacks alongside of more ex pensive homes. A prospective home builder is not going to react very favorably if he is not assured some protection on his investment. We feel sure that it is not the intention of the commission to make recommendations that would penalize the man who wants to build an inexpensive house, but there should and prob ably will be areas designated in which these smaller homes can be built. A zoning ordinance should have been in ef fect five years ago, for as the situation stands now there is but limited areas in which resi dences of the more expensive type can he built in commensurate localities. Other problems face the commission that will tax their ingenuity. For instance there is the matter of the trailer-houses—a problem, that is daily becoming more apparent to everyone who is civically minded. Any ordinance adopted must of necessity, put restrictions on where these trailer houses may be situated and it is upon this one feature that every citizen of Nyssa must make up his mind to give and take. With over twenty-thousand feet of new sewer under contract, which will serve almost all of the present homes in Nyssa sanitary regulations can be instituted that will do away with the many buildings patterned after the famous “Chic Sales Specials”— it is simply a question of public health. And along with that question is the one of keeping livestock within the city limits.
