STILL LIFE IN THE OLD FELLOW there is still life in the ‘Grand Old T HAT Party’ was shown at the meeting last week of the Republican County Central Com mittee. No ‘defeatist’ attitude was shown—and that is a good sign. There is no reason for Republican organizations to feel that their cause is lost. They have the men and women with as much in telligence as have any other party. And they can spend relief money just as judicisciously! Proof of our contention is the Republican county court that we have. Relief money is handled by this group of men as wisely, and we dare say, in some eases, MORE wisely than a lot of others. Another outstanding feeling at this meeting, was that no cause could be furthered if the ‘outs’ did nothing but criticise the ‘ins’. The Malheur Republicans are as cognizant of the necessity of relief projects and the care of the hapless, as any group could be, not only do they realize the necessity for relief measures but thy can show ‘by their works’ that they practice what they preach. If those that attended that meeting will cany to their neighbors, the spirit that emanated from everyone present, there can be no quesitou that Malheur county will stay in the Republican column. A GOOD INVESTMENT $30,000 that is to be spent at the Golden T HE Gate International Exposition, in San Francisco, by the State of Oregon will prove to be one of the best investments the State has ever made. Through the six thousand square feet of this exhibit will pass an approximate ten million people. If, out of this vast number of people that State attracts one per cent, what an avalanche of tourists we will have to prepare for! And if you are statistically minded—fig ures show that each tourist spends, in a two weeks vacation, on an average of one hundred and nine dollars. Oregon’s exhibit will be lo cated in the Court of Western States, being the first one in this group to be paid for. A movement is now under way to augment this money, from the State legislature, by a sys tem of popular subscription from organizations or from the county courts. What better effort could we all put forth, than to see that our glorious State has one of the best exhibits at this mammoth exposition. Only by concerted and effective effort can we hope to attract tourists within our State borders—LET’S GO! EASTERN OREGON. CHEAP ELECT1RICITY has been called in the last day O UR or attention two to the low cost of electrifying the farms in Malheur County. One fanner, who has his farm completely electrified, told us that his last month’s bill showed that it cost him only one and six tenth cents per kilowatt hour. That sounds to us like cheap elecricity, and it becomes cheaper still, when you figure out that the power company that furnished that electric ity also helps pay taxes. Perhaps we stir up a hornets nest, but it is our humble opinion that government owned elec tricity could not be put out to the customer at this low cost.
