For thirty-three years he ruled this vast country wisely and well. He came to Fort George, which Is now Astoria, In 1824 and one year later established a trading post at Fort Vancouver. It took sturdy stuff to face the hardships of settling In the Oregon country, but he won the ocnfidence and admiration of both Indians and whites by his Justice and fairness in all his dealings. He established the first school west of the Rockies and he personally saw to It that all boys and girls, whites and Indians alike, were given the best advantage as could be afforded. Now, eighty years after his death, his name is venerated in Oregon, and his memory kept alive by the people. By common consent, he Is known as the "Father of Oregon." Thirty years ago the McLoughlin Memorial society was organized to save from destruction the historical heme of Mr, McLoughlin. The house was built on the banks of the W il lamette River at Oregon City. He lived there from 1846 to the year of his death in 185E. Eighty percent of the original house is still standing, and through careful study, the home has been restored to its orig inal condition, the entire house and furnishings rich in pioneer history The Memorial society decided that a bronze bust of Dr. McLoughlin should be placed in the South G ar den o f the home. This plan of pro viding a fitting memorial had Its inception at the state convention in Medford in 1934, but few steps were taken toward carrying it out, due to economic conditions. At that time a resolution was adopted which pro- Knot Hole News — Use Aberdeen Coal— Being pretty as a picture Includes having nice frames. — Less Clinkers— In the old days, when a woman wanted a fur coat, she went out and shot a fox. The Memorial Society thought that to the beys and girls of Oregon should go the honor and privilege of preserving the memory of this great character, with their pennies, nlckles and dimes, and that the Oreg. n Congr.ss of Parents and Teachers should be the agency through which the funds should come. The great genius, Adrian Voisin has cast the bust, of heroic size, which portrays the fearless, just and honorable qualities of the man. This bust is new in the east, being cast in bronze.
