A D M IN IS T R A T IO N FORCES B AC K BIG FOREIGN SU G AR Q U O T A S — YSSA is pretty vitally interested in the N sugar bill argument now being staged in Congress and which threatens to thwart the plans of leaders to adjourn congress this month. The center o f the whole argument is how much refined sugar the producers in Hawaii and Puerto Rico be allowed to ship to the American market. This is where Nyssa and the entire Snake river valley is very much interested. If the ad- ministation officials have their way, and allow large shipments from these two sugar producing countries, it might be dangerous to Amalgamat ed’s plans for a sugar mill In fact it might blow the whole thing sky high. On the other hand, congressman from sugar- producing areas are fighting to limit imports and the Jones bill, drawn as a compromise but still unacceptable to executive departments, would limit Hawaii to 290,616 tons and Puert Rico to 126,000 tons. The remainder o f their quotas would have to be raw sugar. Administration o f ficials insisted that Hawaii and Puerto Rcio be permitted to to ship quotas o f 938,000 and 798,- 000 short tons, respectively. The fight is being watched with great interest by western beet interests, farmers and business men as the future o f the beet sugar industry hinges to a large degree upon the successful passage o f this measure. Large quotas from these countries would put the American beet farmer in direct competition with cheap native labor of these two U. S. possessions, and financ ed by the big money boys o f New York and other financial centers. Dumping all this refin ed sugar unto the American market would likely have the effect o f putting a damper on expan sion plans o f beet sugar manufacturing con cerns. No wonder Nyssa is hoping the congressional sugar bloc will win over tne administration forces! There is nothing sweet about the battle in V, ashington. and there'll be nothing sweet said around here if our American beet farmers have hundreds of thousands o f tons o f sugar dumped into their market. About the only thing we can do is hope the matter will be settled soon, the bill passed; and in meantime make a note as to how each congressman votes on the matter . . . just for future reference. ------------------ + ------------------ C L A R K W O O D COMMENTS John L.
