NYSSA , OREGON BUSIEST AND FASTEST OROWINQ TOWN IN OREGON INVESTIGATE - LOCATE NYSSA, OREGON, THURSDAY, MARCH 24, 1932. “DAD” CELEBRATES HIS 75th BIRTHDAY; MARRIED 50 YEARS "Dad” Fred Powell celebrated his 75th birthday yesterday by eat ing a hearty dinner and working in his rock garden. A few weeks from now it will be one of the prettiest gardens in town. Dad Powell also enjoyed a radio selection sung by the Wranglers over KNX in honor of his birthday. Mr. Powell was born In Camden, New Jersey, March 23, 1857. He came west in 1909 and located at Nyssa where he has since resided. He and Mrs. Powell celebrated an other important event a few months ago that “Dad” almost for got, their golden wedding day. Dad says it is no easy task for a man to remember an anniversary day, "but when they get into the 50’s, it Is almost impossible.” $1.50 PER YEAR DANA QUITS GAME COMMISSION; ASKS CHANGE IN POLICY Children Awake To Find Their Y Home On Fire MISS MALHEUR LOCAL COUNTY COURT SECURES SURVEY FOR 20 MILES OF CEN TRAL OREGON ROUTS FROM •U NTURA TO BURNS With delegates from four eastern Oregon counties clamoring for a north and south highway, running from Pendleton to John Day and Burns to a connection with the Yellowstone Cut off at the Harney county seat, It was no easy task for Judge David F. Graham and Commissioner J. D. Fairman to get a survey on 20 miles of the Central Oregon highway from Juntura to Burns at the meeting of the highway commis sion in Portland last week. However, the survey was ordered. With fire making good headway un der the floor and In the walls of their upstairs room, the children of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Dragich had a narrow escape from danger early Friday morn ing. Their house caught fire but little damage was done because of Its early discovery by Mrs. Maud Stone, who makes her home with the Dragich fam ily. Mrs. Stone was awakened by smoke. She lost no time in awakening the Dragich children and taking them ->ut- slde. The alarm was turned In. First at the scene were Mr. and Mrs. Dragich, who were summoned from their work at the Electric Cafe. Many volunteers answered the siren and the blaze was soon extinguished. Damage to the house and furniture was about $200. APRIL 8 AND 9 TWO NIGHT TO RAISE SHOW IS FUNDS PLANNED FOR VALE- OWYHEE; DANCING AND GAMES OF ‘49 MEAN MERRY TIME. When April brings Friday, the 8th, It will usher In the two-day spring frolic of the Nyssa Commercial club. Friday and Saturday, April 8 and 9, will be Owyhee Canyon days. The cele bration will be staged In the spacious Nyssa gymnasium. Colorful decorating is planned. Proceeds from the celebration will be used to pay the $150 assessment of the Vale-Owyhee Land Settlement associa tion which is now due. Marshall N. Dana, associate editor of the Oregon Journal and Democratic candidate for United States senator, Tuesday resigned as a member of the Oregon state game commission to which he was ap pointed by Governor Meier about a year ago. Mr. Dana stated he was quitting the board so the administration and game commission would not be embarrassed by “any suggestion of political exploitation of his ap pointment.” Accompanying the resignation w a s a recommendation that authority over game wardens be restored to the game commission. Owyhee Dam backed up a torrent of flood waters that gushed down the swollen channel of the Owyhee river at the rate of 15,000 cubic feet per sec ond for close to 34 hours Monday. The torrent overturned a dragline that had been abandoned on the cofferdam. It cut out sections of railroad between the mixing plant and the dam and cost the General Construction company damage to property estimated at several thous and dollars.
