All this country is becoming: deeply interested in the coming trial of John T. Scopes, biolcpjr instructor in a school in Term essae for violating the state law which forbids the teaching of the theory of evolution in public schools. It is a test case, de lioerately arranged by Mr. Scopes and his friends, and he is assured the support of sejen tists and ethers who welcome the i sue between liberalism ant conservatism. The fundamen talists will be commanded, pre sumably, by the perennial W. J Bryan. The indictment of Mr. Scopes by the grand jury a Dayton, Tenn.. was a foregone conclusion, for there is no at tempt to claim that he did not violate the statute. The fight, of course, centers on the consti tutionulity of the Lw. The little Tennessee town is prepat ing fo* a great influx of visitors and it may be that a huge temporal y arena will be constructed f< r the trial, which is to open July 10 Clarence Harrow and Dudley Field Malone, both nationally prominent lawyers, will be among counse for the defense The American Civil Liborti i Union is really hack of the case, and the American Associati./t for he Advancement of Science is taking a deep interest in it, although not olh- tally. A QUESTION. An an*¡out subscriber .vrites in to inquire what would happe should the earth suddenly stof re.volving on its axis. We cat only answer by supposing at analogous case. When an aut< traveling even at t he rate of 61 miles an hour suddenly runs U[ against an unsurmountable ob stacle the occupants of the autt usualliy take a header out through the wind shield. Th< earth travels on its axis about 1000 miles an hour, consequently any sudden stop would be likely to be attended by very serious consequences. The question arose over at explanation given said subscriber regarding Joshua’s command for the sun to stand still. The explanation was to the effect that "'hat really happened when the sun was commanded to stand still was that the earth stopped revolving on its axis. This would be a good question for some local theologian to grappl* with. An eastern state supreme court judge has just granted a permanent injunction restraining school authoi ities from enforcing the law permitting school child ren time off during school hour for religious instruction, pre sumably an the ground that the law was unconstitutional. In spit* of the fact that these laws have been deolared unconstitu tional time after time by state supreme courts, misguided zealots still persist in forcing them on the statute books. Why the insistence that evolutionists be required to prove their theories? Has the opposition attempted to prove it« side of the question? The word of an unknown writer, written when men’s scientific knowledge w-as very limiter', is all the proof so far submitted that the Bible theory is true. Be reasonable, b r e th r e n . It denotes poor sportsmanship to demand more of your opponent than you are willing to do yourself.
