QUESTION OF NERVE. Once more stress Is placed on the fact that women conductors checked an Impending panic when a subway train ran wild In New York city, says Philadelphia Telegraph. From this one would naturally gather that It Is unusuul for women to meet a big emergency without some hysteria, but Is this the right Impression? There Is reason to believe that man Is not su perlor to woman in the matter of nerve. Is it the man who remains calm and knows Just what to do when something happens to the children? Is It the man who, while wnlklng along the street, tears his petticoat in strips nnd hinds up the bleeding hurts oi some injured person? Is It the man who can sit In a dental chair and knit a sweater while having teeth repnlred? Many men, of course, are Justified In boasting of their nerve, but a greut surgeon who has to have a cool, col lected nurse at his side during a erlti cal operation will tell you that it is not alwn.vs the woman who grows falnl and has to be carried out. “ T h e o b j e c t o f t h i s w a r la t o d a l l v a r t h e fr e e p e o p le s o f t h e w o r ld f r o m th e m e n a c e a n d th e a c t u a l p o w e r o f a v a st m i l i t a r y e s t a b l i s h m e n t c o n t r o ll e d b y a n I r r e s p o n s ib l e g o v e r n m e n t , w h ic h , h a v i n g s e c r e t ly p la n n e d t o d o m in a t e t h e w o r ld , p r o c e e d e d to c a r r y o u t t h e p la n w it h o u t r e g a r d e it h e r to t h e s a c r e d o b l ig a t io n s of t r e a t y o r th e lo n g -e s t a b lis h e d p ra c t ic e s a n d l o n g - c h e r i s h e d p r in c ip l e s o f In . t e r n a t lo n a l a c t io n a n d h o n o r ; . . . WE FIGHT FOR PEACE AND FOR SELF-RESPECT. What sort of a peace does Germany hope to secure? Every time there Is a change of ad ministration at Washington there arises a problem of selecting states men to represent the United States in foreign countries. The man chosen for the court of St. James, for in stance, can be no poor man. He must be able to entertain and to be enter tained In the style to which English noblemen are accustomed. He must keep up a fine establishment in Lon don. Our minister to England, then, must be able to spent some hundreds of thousands of dollars each year, says Houston Post. The rental of his residences will amount to more than $60,000; und that brings to the fore the main subject of this writing. Re cently Sir Arthur Lee. formerly mili tary attache of the British govern ment at Washington and now director general of food production for Great Br|tain, gave to the people of Eng land his famous country residence. Chequers court, to be for all time the country home of the prime ministers of England. There is In this a sug gestion for all Americans who reside In foreign lands long enough to ac quire title to residences suitable for the purposes. Hod the United States been given homes for Our ambassa dors and ministers In each of the for eign countries the problem which Mr. Wilson faced at the beginning of his administration would have been Im mensely easier to solve. A worn as to suspended sentences. The statute relating thereto Is the one ray of sunlight that has found Its way Into the administration of the crim inal law la recent years. Under Its provisions a Judge Is empowered to free a defendant on parole usually un der Instructions to report to a proba tion officer at stated Intervals A lapse into the ways of evil usually results In the probationer being returned to the court and the Imposition of a prison sentence. How successful is this benign feature of the criminal law may be appreciated from the fact that In only about eight per cent of cases of suspended sentences are violations of parole found. This Is the best refu tation of the cynic who prntes about coddling criminals and who assumes a Dracoiaican attitude towards his erring sisters and brethren who are un fortunate enough to be catapulted Into the dismal abyss of crime.—Humani tarian. It was a shocking waste to kill seals for their fur and throw away the car cases. Corned seal meat formed part of the cargo ol’ a vessel which arrived at Seattle from Behring sea. The meat ir not fatty, as might be supposed, because the blubber Is removed. It Is dark red In color, rich nnd juicy, and makes a fine roast. Américains who have tasted both say that sea 1 meat is better than whale meat, no d now that whnlc meat Is find ing consumers seal, meat is likely to be brought forward In large quanti ties. There is no reason why it should not he canned as well as corned, in which cape it may be eaten fresh at a gre/it distance from the region of the seal fisheries. “I studied nlgebrn when I went to school and was considered good at it,” admits Tom Thompson In the Howard Courant. “ And now all I can remem ber abot it It Is that I used to study It and w as considered good at It. How is it with you?” Precisely ttye same, except tibat we were never considered good at It.
