O c rn o n i 3 £ i<jlv 6 THURSDAY, FEB 21. 1974 Four Locals W ill Run In 2 6 Mile Race The 26 mile run called the Seaside Marathon, last year attracted two runners from Ver noma, and this year two more are added to that figure Melvin Nice, the Biology and Boy’s P.E teacher, and Pat Curl, a student at VHS ran the race last year. Nice managed to finish about 350th in a field of about 600 participants Pat fin ished a strong 31st place in the competition. Approximately 600 people started the race, but only about 500 managed to finish The race starts at the Seaside Turn Around and goes through the town of Gearheart Then the runners turn around near the Astoria Country Club, and they run back to the starting place for the finish The whole length of the race is 26 miles 385 yards, up and down hills, and through long straight stretches The other two runners from Vernonia besides Nice and Pat are Pat's brother Jeft. ano Jeff's classmate Kelly Smith. During the last several miles of last year’s race, Nice de veloped cramps in his legs, which forced him to stop running until the pain subsided This is probably the reason for his late finish Training for this year’s Mara thon. he was running around the seven mile loop, and was sav agely attacked by a dog which left him with several teeth marks on his thigh Pat. who is the number one cross country man at VHS. runs the year around and stays in top physical condition Jeff is hoping to run the course in about three hours and 15 minutes, and Nice is bidding for about the same time. Kelly Smith is a good, con sistent runner and should finish well up in the pack, with Jeff and Nice. There are a lot of students at VHS. who are planning to drive to Seaside to watch the four athletes torture themselves. A statement from Pat after completing the 26 mile marathon last year was, “ I t ’s not the first 26 miles that gets to you. i t ’s the last 385 yards that hurt.’ ’ The Marathon w ill be run February 23, and w ill start at 11:30 sharp Driver Testing To Be Given At VHS Driver permit and driving tests w ill be given February 28 at the high school at l l a.m The cost for the learners permit is $3 Proof of birth is also required before a permit can be issued Adults in the community who need to take the permit or driving test should contact Gor don Crowston at the high school. For those people who w ill be taking the driving test, their own automobile is needed. Mrs Pat Taylor was given a baby shower last Thursday, at the Robert Carson home by faculty and friends. Survival Assembly Held Last Tuesday Last Tuesday the local Arm y recruiters f r o m Longview. Washington came to VHS to present a cold weather Survival Demonstration Assembly. Sgt Terry Henry demonstrat ed different experiments with water and tin cans With these experiments he demonstrated that wool was the warmest to be wearing After the first demonstration he showed a movie about cold weather survival in the mount ains After the movie he illus trated different things with sur vival kits He showed the stu dents and faculty how they could make their own survival kit. Sgt Henry demonstrated sur vival kits that he said was the best one that he has found on the market. He had Kathy Kretch- mer, a freshman help him demonstrate this kit The kit contains a plastic bag, a package of salt, tea. sugar, and two bullion cubes HIGH SCHOOL JOURNALISM Rooks Smash SAWDUST Dan Kabler left for San Diego last week because his brother had a heart attack, and was not expected to live His brother is recovering satisfactorily at the present time. VERNONIA Thursday, February 14, thè Vernonia loggers ripped the Seaside Seagulls The first quarter the Fresh man Loggers walked all over the Seagulls, scoring 15 points to Seaside’s zip Terry Ellson put in 9 of the 15 points In the second ouarter it was still Vernonia all the way, chalking up 12 points to the Seagull’s 7. The half time score was 27-7 Vernonia. The second half proved to be no difterent from the first half The third quarter Vernonia dumped in 14 to Seaside's 8 points In the fourth quarter Vernonia was again the victor, making It) points to the Seagull’s 7. The final score was a lopsided 51-22 win for the Loggers High scorer for the game was Terry Ellson with 11 points. Other Vernonia scorers were Rick Johnson chalking up 7 points, Vince Bake -, Jeff Bell ingham and Gary Ellson each adding 6 points, John Roady and Milton Dennis putting in *i points, Shawn Naeve making 3 points and D.J Cole and George O’ Neil dumping in 2 points each JV Loggers Defeat Jays The Vernonia JV ’s overcame the Concordia team, with a final score of 61 to 54, after being down by nine points at the end of the third quarter. The JV Loggers fell behind by four points in the first half meaning that they would have to play catch-up ball the last half The Loggers were outplayed in the first half even though they gave a good effort When the second half began, the JV ’s were behind by four points The Loggers gave a gallant try in the third quarter even though they lost another five points putting them down by nine points. The Vernonia JV ’s showed that they were much better conditioned than the Concordia JV's when they pulled off a very successful final quarter by out scoring the Jay's by five to one. The JV Loggers ended the game trium phantly when they over came the odds and beat Con cordia by seven points with a final score of 61 to 54. The high scorers were Bryan Traylor. 16; Kris Crowston, 11; Bob Black 10. VHS Girls Look for Odd Jobs In Town The girls of Vernonia High School have been asking Mrs. Hendryx. the girls counselor, if she knows of any part-time jobs they can do If anyone in the community needs a g irl to do some odd job, such as sewing, cooking, ironing, mending, typing, babysitting, cleaning, etc., Mrs. Hendryx would appreciate a call to let her know. The first quarter started out disasterously for the Loggers as Concordia, took control of the game with a <-n lead VHS then rallied back to cut the defense minded Bluejays lead to two points. 6-4. It was nip and tuck for most of the quarter, until the last threw minutes when the Loggers hafi a chance to tie the score, but a traveling violation quickly ended the drive. The second quarter had Ver nonia fans on their feet as, without Mike Smith, they closed within four points The hot shooting of Concordia’s Art Harrison ended the Diggers hope of tieing up the score as the half time buzzer rang The half time score saw Concordia with a six point advantage 21-27 The third quarter saw Con cordia run away with the score, as Vernonia couldn't seem to get the ball through the hoop Senior Greg Bellingham displayed quick movements as he success fully weaved through the tough Concordia defenders to score a couple of baskets and temporar ily pick up the lagging Loggers Despite Bellingham s efforts and the tough Vernonia defense, Concordia consistently hit the long outside shots and by the end of the third quarter had taken a twenty point lead, with the score reading 30-50 The fourth quarter was almost an exact repeat of the third period, as the Loggers couldn't seem to pull themselves to gether The quarter seemed to last forever as the Bluejays took a twenty-six point advantage over the Loggers With only 3:00 left to play, both teams put in their top JV's. The only highlight of the fourth quarter was when the Vernonia JV's outplayed the Concordia JV ’s, coming from a 26 point deficeit to narrowing Concor dia's lead to 18 points.
