of Life C am paign to fight ch ild ­
ren's lung d isea ses, according to
D on S c h o lla n d e r , H on orary
Chairman of the Oregon Chap­
ter, N ational C ystic F ibrosis
R esearch Foundation
Mrs Goodman will lead local
volunteers in raising funds to
support research and ca re pro­
gram s for children affected by
lu n g -d a m a g in g d is e a s e s lik e
cy stic fibrosis, sev ere asthm a,
chronic bronchitis, bronchiecta­
sis. and a condition called
"childhood em p h y sem a ." Child­
ren in Oregon and Southw est
Washington are diagnosed and
followed at the C-F Center.

A house - to - house appeal in
Vernonia is scheduled for S ep t­
em ber 10 through the 16.
Cystic fibrosis, an incurable
gentic d isea se, is inherited when
both parents carry the recessiv e
gene for C-F It is believed that
one in tw enty persons or 10
m illion A m ericans m ay carry
the C - F gene, usually without
knowing it. Current research
funded by the National Cystic
Fibrosis R esearch Foundation is
seeking a practical test to iden­
tify these carriers
B ecau se of im proved therapy
and constant research, m any
C-F patients a re living beyond
infancy to their teens and into
young adulthood That sa m e
kind of therapy is relievin g and
often curing children suffering
from the other respiratory a ff­
lictions w hose sym p tom s re­
sem b le those of C-F.
“ Most people don't realize that
there are six million children in
the U.S. affected by pulm onary
illn ess,” said Mrs Goodman.
“For som e of these children,
breathing is not the natural
function w e, who are lucky, take
for granted ”
The Breath of Life Campaign
supports not only research, but
over 100 C-F Centers for diag
nosis and treatm ent across the
country

ing the 1973-74 budget w as signed

that em p loyees could use the
m ach in es for personal copies at
a ch arge of 10 cen ts per copy. It
w as also noted that billings to the
E xtension O ffice and the Soil and
W ater C onservation office would
be reduced to five cen ts per copy
for copies m ade prior to July 1,
1973 and that a letter be directed
to th ese departm ents advising of
the costs
