OSU for Fees
Oregon State University stu
dents w ill be able to pay their
tuition-fees in three equal in
stallments during each term
starting this fall.
The deferred paym ent plan
was developed to help students
and fam ilies better meet the
rising costs of higher education,
university officials said.
Students who wish to use the
deferred paym ent plan - rather
than the usual lum p sum pay
ment at the start of each term •
w ill pay one-third of th eir tu i
tion-fees at registration; another
one-third three weeks la te r; and
the final third a month a fte r that.
F all term deferred paym ent
dates, for exam ple, w ill be
Sept 26, Oct. 15 and Nov. 15.
There w ill be a »3 charge for
deferred paym ent students to
meet the extra costs of cash
iering, accounting, etc. involved
each term , according to Hugh F.
Jeffrey, director of business a f
fairs.
The university-wide $25 de
posit required to cover b reak
age, losses, etc., must still be
paid at the start of fall term ,
Jeffrey emphasized. So must
parking p erm it charges, student
health insurance, etc.
Tuition-fees m ake up the bulk
of the higher education charges,
however, and these m ay be
spread out in the future, he
added.
Tuition rates for 1973-74 were
announced July 23 by the State
Board of Higher Education.
They are $136 per term for
Oregon resident undergraduates
(»8 per term more than last
y e a r); »530 a term for non
resident undergraduates (a $49
per term increase); and »223 per
term for graduate students (a
$13 per term increase).
Fees (health, building and
incidental fees for activities,
athletics, etc.) are the same for
all full-tim e OSU students -
$42.50 per term .

NEWS A VIEWS
John Knowlton
Vince Davie of Beaverton fou
nd Vernonia's Jam boree week
end to be a friendly occasion
indeed Sunday when he was the
first place finisher in the annual
Jam boree Golf Tournam ent held
at the Vernonia Golf Club.
Davis netted a one under par
71 in the sun-drenched 18-hole
tournament and was knotted
with five others for the top spot.
But by virtue of having the
lowest Callaw ay handicap (3),
he was able to take first place
honors and pocket the 350 gift
certificate that went to the top
finisher.
L a rry Borst eagled the last
hole to tie a m em ber of his
foursome Sam Beardsley for
second place. Both L a rry and
Sam had Callaw ay handicaps of
six and they split the combined
second and th ird place gift
certificates. Paul Nelson and
Ulus D illa rd did the same with
the fourth and fifth place gift
certificates and John Stennick
overcam e nine penalty strokes
to take sixth place.
The tournam ent, one of the
biggest and most popular of the
year, accomodated some 53 p a r
ticipants, 14 of whom ended up
w ith a prize of some kind. Six of
those winners tied a t 72. Sam
Spicker playing to a scratch
handicap took seventh place and
just edged out D ave Siedelman,
D an Fletcher, Chet Slovich, Joe
M ag o ff and F red Feltner.
The 13th and 14th place prizes
w ent to the lowest Callaway
handicappers who netted 73.
They w ere A lbert Schlottmann
and Jean Stennick. Those who
netted 73 but did not receive a
prize w ere Jack Wendling, John
and W illard Rohrback, Dot
Knowlton, and Carol Turner.
The next tournament action is
scheduled for this coming Sun
day, Aug. 5, when the Vernonia
M en's Golf Association plays
th eir second home-and-home
m atch with Sunset Grove at
Vernonia Golf Club. The locals
won by a narrow two point
m arg in in the firs t m atch and all
m em bers are encouraged to play
in this Sunday’s m atch and help
retain the revolving trophy.
Tee off tim e is set for 8:30 a.m .
Also, August 7 is the monthly
dinner night for the Tuesday
night M en ’s Club. A t last Tues
day night’s golf session, John
Knowlton rolled in the longest
putt on num ber one, Sam
Beardsley got K P on number
four, L a rry Borst was eight feet
aw ay for K P honors on num ber
seven, Dan F letch er took K P on
num ber eight and D ick Aldrich
slam m ed out the long drive on
num ber nine.
R a in ie r’s Tw i-L ig ht leaguers
played for trophies last Thurs
day a t Vernonia and by nightfall
two trophies had been won but
the coveted low gross trophy
was still in doubt. Jack Wendling
and Ken G regory each shot a 77
to tie for the low gross hardw are.
They w ill play off la te r to see
who packs it home. Ottis Maddox
won the low net trophy for the
low handicappers w ith a 68 and
D ale Fisher took the low net
trophy for the high handicappers
w ith a 70.
The Equalizers regained the
lead in the N ational League
team play by three strokes over
the Long Shots. E ith e r team
could still grab the second half
title in the final week of play.
