The first quarter started off poorly for Vernonia as Knappa ran up a six-point lead before the locals could get on the board. None-the- less. Knappa went farther out in front midway through the quarter, but Ole Bergerson hit three corner shots to bring Vernonia closer The period ended with Knappa out in front by a score of 18 to 11 The second quarter went a little better for VHS as Earl Aber crombie began finding the range and Rick Davis went to the line for six points. Vernonia shot an impressive 66 percent from the line, but appear ances can be deceiving That 66 percent turned out to be two out of three charity shots Warrenton shot a slightly better 70 percent, and managed to collect 14 of their points at the line The next game for the Loggers will be at Portland Christian Janu ary 19 The JV action saw Vernonia down Warrenton by a score of 53 to 46 Vandalism High School For a long time little vandalism has occurred at the high school, but lately there seems to be a small plague of different kinds of misbe havior by the students. Last year the student body went through the whole year without anybody punching a hole through the ceiling This year someone had to be a big shot and punch a hole through the ceiling This may not be much, but it is stupid and very immature for high school students; it also is an inconvenience to the school and does cost money. Thievery has been another prob lem lately, mostly in the girls' and boys' locker rooms. One student had thirteen dollars taken from the locker room, while in the gymnas ium Things have gotten so bad in the girls' locker room that the girls in PE had to stop using the lockers for their clothes. Even though many cases of van dalism have occurred in the school, most of the students have been doing a good job of respecting the school and other peoples' property. Lost Class Photos M ay Be Replaced Thursday, January 4, a repre sentative from Bruno Studios was sent out to take retakes of students and to photograph organizations, and stated that the 1970 class pic ture could be reproduced if it had been lost at all On one of his breaks, the photo grapher walked down the Junior- Senior hall and was looking at the class pictures that are traditionally hung in the hall every year He noticed that the 1970 picture was missing A passer-bv informed him that it had unfortunately been lost and never replaced He said that he thought the picture was floating around the studio and that the people there didn’t know where it belonged He also stated that if the picture had been lost it could have been remade. The photographer said he would look into the matter and if it was in the studio, he would have it sent out right away and if it had to be remade it would be a couple of months before it got here. Wayne Welch, head custodian of District 47J, came to the Jourii alism class Thursday to be inter viewed by a journalism student concerning the past heating prob lem in the high school Welch stated that the high school building is not a new building. 20 years old to be exact The hardware is naturally worn, therefore it takes more maintenance to keep up the utilities. Another reason is that the building isn’t really built for ex tremely cold weather, the kind of weather Vernonia has been exper iencing for the past month This year. Welch is breaking in new custodians It takes at least five years for a head custodian to learn all about the heating plant, and the other utilities in the school The first malfunction that occur ed was the automatic water control It took Welch and the other custo dians two or three days to find out what was really the matter with the heat. Welch made the following state ments " I feel that the majority of the studentbody take very good care of the high school building compared to many of the other schools around the state I would like the students of VHS to please* report any kind of malfunction either to me, M r Farrow, or Mr. Heisterman This way it will make it much easier to find out what is wrong, and have people know that we are doing our job.” • IF Y E Reporter Is “ Picked for Area LOREN K EN N ED Y potahi la JV action Friday night the young Loggers damped the visit ing Knappa five, 4B-4S. JV Loggers Down Knappa Junior Sandra Tupper received word this weekend that she is elected the IF Y E reporter for the Vernonia area. IF Y E stands for International Farm Youth Exchange and is in conjunction with the 4-H program all over the nation. In 1948, IF Y E was established with the idea in mind that young people throughout the nation can contribute to world peace and understanding, through the ex change of ideas, and culture with the youth of other countries Sandra's job will be to distribute letters from IF Y E ’s already in for eign countries to the different 4-H clubs in this area Through these letters, the 4-H clubs will be able to see what their contributions are doing in other lands By means of these contributions about 125 club members in the United States are exchanged with other members in other countries The senior class of VHS will be selling bumper stickers and candy bars as soon as supplies arrive.
