Control Action Due Leaf Curl Control measures lor the preven tion of peach leaf curl need to be taken on or as close as possible to December 15, indicates Don Coin Walrod, extension agent Peach leaf curl, a fungus disease that attacks newly developed leaves in spring, can only be controlled by applying fungicides in December and January to protect developing buds Attempts at control at other times of the year have not been effective in this area, says Walrod. Recommended spray m aterial include Bordeaux 12-12-100 or lime sulphur at eight gallons in water to make 100 gallons of spray. Walrod suggests adding a sticker to all sprays and indicates that the tho roughness and completness of ap plication is essential for successful control. Fixed coppers, often referred to as tri-basic copper sulphate m at erials. normally do not stand up as well under rainy spells as Bordeaux materials, but some growers have preferred using them because they are readily available and easy to m ix and use The addition of one quart of dormant spray oil for 100 gallons of spray m ixture w ill im prove sticking qualities. A second spray application w ill be needed approximately January 15 to assure protection. Spraying should be done when temperatures are above freezing. The volume for October was up 26.2 percent from the Sep (ember 1972 total and well above the October 1971 volume of 161.2 million board feet. Japan was the destination of 261.6 m illion board feet or 90.4 percent of the October 1972 west coast exports Washington and Oregon exported 267.7 m illion board feet in October, up 21.5 percent from the September volume October shipments from northern California totaled 15.7 m illion board feet, up sharply from the September volume of 3.8 million board feet Alaska exported a total of 6.1 m illion board feet in October, an increase of 14.1 percent from September shipments. Douglas-fir accounted for 27.5 percent of October exports, and Port-Orford-cedar, 0.7 percent Other softwoods, prim arily western hemlock and true firs, made up the remaining 71 8 percent. October shipments had a total value of $41 m illion at port of ex portation and an average value of $141 55 per thousand board feet. Douglas-fir averaged 3141.05 per thousand board feet, Port-Orford- cedar $432.23, and other softwoods $138.99 West coast softwood log exports totaled 2.3 billion board feet through the first 10 months of 1972, com pared with 1.4 billion board feet for the same period of 1971. The rela tively low' volume in 1971 reflected in part labor disputes which affect ed west coast ports in Washington. Oregon and California in the third quarter of 1971. Mr. and Mrs. Dale Dressel a rriv ed at the home of her folks, the W illard Garlocks, Saturday evening for a two-week visit. They had just made a trip to the Lewiston, Idaho area and were caught in the Colum bia Gorge during last week’s bad weather.
