The Dalles Dam
An additional 100.000 kilowatts of
electrical power were added to the
capability of the Columbia R iver
System the past week when Unit 15.
»the first of eight new units being
added at The Dalles Dam began
producing power on Monday

trict Engineer, announced that Unit
16 is expected to be on the line later
this week to add another 100.000
kilowatts of available electrical
power to the Northwest system. The
additional 200.000 kilowatts is equal
to two-thirds of the amount of power
which was curtailed for industrial
use during the period of high
demand the past week. Colonel
Saling said
Addition of the new units at The
Dalles Dam was begun in M arch of
1970 under a $16 million contract
with Halvorson-Mason Construction
Company. The rem aining six addi
tional units, now under various
stages of construction, are expected
to begin producing power by mid-
1973. to complete the total of 22
powerhouse units provided for in
the original construction of The

Living Christmas trees are be
coming increasingly popular
And it is possible, says the Oregon
Departm ent of Agriculture, that as
a result of this popularity some
Christmas tree growers have inad
vertently fallen into the classifi
cation of nurserymen
As nurserymen these growers,
the departm ent points out. are
subject to requirements of the
Oregon Nursery Law . wrhich includ
es licensing by the Oregon Depart
ment of Agriculture and inspection
prior to the trees being dug
The nursery stock inspections are
for detecting the presense of plant
pests diseases and noxious weeds
Listed as noxious weeds not ac
ceptable in nursery stock are quack
grass. Canadian thistle, morning
glory, horsetail rush.
Aliy nursery stock, and this
includes balled living Christmas
trees, found to be infested with
noxious weeds cannot be sold as
nursery stock
Application for nursery licenses
in Oregon are made on a form fu r
nished by the departm ent of agri
culture The license fee is based on
a one m ill per dollar of business
basis, with a m inim um fee of 125 to
cover the first $25,000 worth of
sales
Persons not licensed as nursery
men and planning to sell the living
Christmas trees can call the Salem
office of the Oregon Departm ent of

had their licenses to drive suspend
ed for 90 days this year because
they have refused to take a chem i
cal test to determ ine how much
alcohol was in their blood
Under the state's implied consent
law . refusal to take a test after
arrested for a driving while intoxi
cated charge is grounds for a 90-day
license suspension This suspension
has no relationship to the subse
quent outcome of the drinking
charge
