police netw ork system , w hich provides instant
contact w ith a com pu ter-co ntro lled file in
S a le m A C e n trex system w as installed , a
c o m p le te telephone o ffic e in itself.

In
1971 th is d is t r i c t in s t a lle d 1,690
telephones, m a k in g a total of 31,166 G e n e ra l
Telephone subscribers to this a re a . In the firs t
seven months of this y e a r, G e n e ra l Telephone
has added 1,070 phone installation s.
In 1971 there w e re 1,400 c o m p la in t reports,
w hich re la te to e v e ry th in g in re p a ir service.
F o r the firs t six m onths in 1972, re p a ir
com plain ts w ere reduced by 100 p e r m onth
because of new and im p ro v e d telephone
fac ilities .
A n d w hile a ll this im p ro v e m e n t costs
m oney, G e n e ral Telephone had its last ra te
increase in 1970
In 1960, a v e ra g e cost fo r in s ta llatio n was
$490 p e r telephone. T o d ay th a t fig u re has
ju m p e d to $1,100 because of the sophistication
of equ ipm ent, m a te ria ls and labor.
W h ile a ll this re fin e d equ ip m e n t has been
in s ta lled in W ashington County, o th e r counties
a re using the latest a v a ila b le s e rv ic e fro m
G e n e ra l Telephone.
T h e telephone is used fo r pocket paging
system s o r public address system s. I t also is
used fo r b u rg la r a la rm s o r h eat and cold
te m p e ra tu re m o n ito ring equipm ent.

screen by re m o te control.
A n d television is used constantly through
telephone lines fo r m o n ito rin g in banks and
o th er businesses w h e re s e c u rity m easures a re
taken.
F o r those who don’ t lik e pay telephones,
when a w a y fro m hom e, a m o b ile telephone is
a v a ila b le fo r autom obiles. C re d it c a rd s also
a re a v a ila b le fo r those w ho p re fe r to c e n tra liz e
b illin g on th e ir m o n th ly statem en t.
