The church was decorated in the Easter theme. On the altar were two white tapered candles, a large bouquet of white gladioli and car nations with the open Bible in the center. The wedding candles sat before the Bible while on either side of the altar were candlabra holding seven tapered candles sur rounded by E aster lilies. The bride was given in marriage by her parents, Mr. and Mrs Ed gar Hartzell. She wore a floor- length gown of white bonded lace the empire-styled bodice topped by a mandarin collar edged in ruffled lace. It featured full sleev es gathered to wide cuffs edged in matching lace ruffles. A fingertip veil of illusion fell from a crown of embroidered flowers with a vel vet lily in the center, highlighted by a cluster of velvet bows, she carried a white satin covered Bible topped with a white orchid trim med with white satin stream ers tinned with lilies-of-the-vaUey. The bride’s sister, Mrs. Claracy Hancock, was matron of honor. She wore a full length gown of blue bonded lace with a criss cross bodice and short sleeves. She carried a nosegay of large white daisies with blue stream ers. Best man was Everett Hancock, brother-in-law of the bride. The bride’s mother chose a sheath dress of deep lavendar with a corsage of orchid-color carna tions. She had suffered a heart attack. The Columbia County (5 area) Senior Advisory Committee met April 5 at Rainier Moose Lodge to report on progress and evaluation of the first quarter of 1972 Those present from Vernonia were Rosa Steele, Maudaleen Murray and Le- ta Whiteman. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Hume visited here with Mrs. Maudaleen Mur ray last Monday and Tuesday. They were returning to Wanatehee from wintering in Yuma, Ariz.. While here they vlfeited Mr Mur ray at the convalescent home in St. Helens. Friends and relatives of Frank Schmidlin gathered at the scoot cabin Sunday for potluck. The oc casion was Mr. Schmidlin’s birth day. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Francis Keagbine and fam i ly, Mr. and Mrs. John Ohler of Portland, Mr. and Mrs. Gregory Schmidlin of Timber, Mrs. Anna Asburn of Hillsboro, Mr. and Mrs. Bert Snyder of Scappoose, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Shaver of Lebanon. Last Friday twenty-nine Senior Citizens enjoyed the usual ootluck dinner. Dorothy Churchill of Scap poose was a guest. Dinner was followed by a business meeting. County Rodeo Queen Tryouts Set N ay 6 The 1972 Columbia County Fair and Rodeo Queen will be crowned this year to succeed Susie Click of Warren, last years queen. The of ficial date set for the tryouts has been set for May 6, according to a F air Board appointed commit tee headed by Mrs. Otis Smith. Those eligible for the title in clude girls who have never been married, who are between the ag es of 16 and 22, and who are r e sidents of Columbia County. The Vernonia Study Club met at the home of Bess Nichols for their April meeting. There were nine members present. We had as a guest speaker, Betty Curl who spoke about Cancer and explained how the money given locally and in Oregon is spent. The plans were made for our Library Tea which this year will encourge local people to take their coffee break at the library on April 13 from 2 to 5 p.m. Pro ceeds for the day wil be used to buy new library books. We extend a special invitation to everyone to stop by the library for a cup of coffee on Thursday. Our next meeting will be at the home of Amy Kamholz with Rea- tha Horn giving the lesson. At the close of the evening refreshments were served by our hostess, Bess Nichols. Students Visit Mathews Home Mel Clark, Sebe Morgan and Bob Charter arrived at the Walter Ma thews home Friday evening from Lamoni, Iowa. Mel, the Mathew’s son-in-law, is an art instructor at Graceland College and Sebe and Bob are Graceland College seniors. On Sunday afternoon they left for the U. of Puget Sound, Ta coma. where Mel, with other gra duate students who are working on their M. of F.A. from the U. of Puget Sound will set up an art show which is a requirement in the M aster’s program. The three young men are making their trip during Graceland spring vacation and will return to Iowa on the weekend to resume their work at the college. From 10 to 12 we had a training session in which Mrs. Schrader taught halter and Mrs. Pitt taught riding Then from 12 to 12:30 we had lunch and from 12:30 to 4 we had a horse show judged by Glenda Morganson. The events in which the 4-H members participated in were showmanship, bareback equitation and western and english equitation. The high point winner in class “A” was Mike Schrader and the high point winner in class “B” was Kelly Knapp. On April 3, tht 4-H clubs of Ver nonia met at the fire hall for a training session on demonstrations directed by Mr. Stevely. Candy Brunsman, Sandra Tupper and Ste phanie Gwin from the Maple Mea dows 4-H club and Russle Carol from the 4-H Livestock Club gave demonstrations for the group. Mr. Stevely also handed out informa tion on giving demonstrations. Steve Brown. The “ actors” were from Taft, Oregon and won much applause from the audience. Mt. Heart Rebekah Lodge put on a “ Spring Fashion Show” . Louise Hamnett acted as narrator. Mem bers participating were: Noma Callister, Evelyn Heath, Dorotheos Moore, Florence Akers, Reatha Horn, Irene Minger, Gertrude Sch- alock, and Arlie Pirfmons. The stunning and unusital costumes displayed drew1 forth much laugh ter and applause. Others joining the group later in the E aster Parade were P atri cia Goodman as the “Easter Bunny" followed by M aiv Brown, Isabel Barr, Marie Atkins, and Leona Ha- verland. All displayed their latest Easter bonnets. Mildred Jessee acted as pianist. Among the many guests present were members frofn Aloha Rebe kah Lodge; Fern Rebekah Lodge of Rainier; Helen Gottman, Trus tee of the I.O.O.F. Home Board and Vernon Hahn, Past Grand Master of the Grand Lodge, IOOF of Oregon. Refreshments were served in the dining room after the meeting. Marie Atkins and Arlie Emmons were in charge. Vernonia Grange met at the Grange Hall April 8 with a very good attendance. The 3rd and 4th Degree was gi ven to our new members, Mr. and Mrs. Schmidlin and Mr. and Mrs. Black. Lawton Wadell, Columbia' County Deputy and Master of Na- tel Grange helped with the degree work. Also helping from Natal was Laura Carmichel and Ruth Steers. The rummage sale was held and voted a very big suc cess. Vernonia Grange planned also for a card party April 22 at which time the quilt will be displayed that was tied at the last CWA meeting. Spring Dance Set For Grade Students April 14 the seventh and eighth grade will have a spring dance from 7 to 9:30 p.m. in the grade school basement The theme this year is “Swing into Spring ” The music is taped by Randy Parrow. The best man was Larry Grund. Also attending the wedding was the bride’s two chil dren Jessie and Janet Carter and Bob Grund. The groom wore a blue suit and tie and a white carnation.
