Law Bars Pets
From Markets
Buster, Rover, Gyp, Prince—
they all may be well behaved dogs
and just like members of the fa
mily, but the Oregon Department
of Agriculture says the one place
they must not go with the family
is into the grocery store.
It’s not just that some people
who do not have pets are fussy
about having them around food
they plan to purchase, but the
fact that under inspections of the
grocery stores made by the depart
ment pets are not allowed in food
markets.
Joe Gray, assistant chief in the
dairy and consumer services di
vision for foods, says the depart
ment has received some complaints
from persons who have seen dogs
in stores.
He points out that not even a
small dog being carried in the
arm s or in a basket is permitted
in food m arkets.
The departm ent is also on the
alert for any produce outside the
store that is sitting on the ground,
for under sanitation requirements
it must be high enough that it can
not be contaminated by animals.
Girl Scouts to
Observe Week

been designated as Girl Scout
Week. Girl Scouts of the USA will
be 54 years old on March 12.

area has grown to over 150 girls
registered in 11 troops.
Sunday, March 6, has been set
aside as Girl Scout Sunday. Many
of the girls will be visiting local
churches as individuals or with
their leaders as a troop.

of the Columbia Association for
Retarded Children, has issued a
special appeal to residents of the
county to join the organization dur
ing its membership drive this
month.
Membership is open to anyone
interested in helning the estimated
600 mentally retarded in the coun
ty, according to Mrs. Thorp. Fam
ily memberships are $4; associate

bers of school boards and profes
sional workers such as teachers,

Easter Seals to
Be Mailed Soon
The Oregon Society for Crippled
Children and Adults will open its
annual E aster Seal sale Tuesday,
March 1, seeking finances to op
erate a multiplicity of projects in
the state.
Richard L. Yost, society presi
dent, said an estimated 480,000 Ore
gon residents will receive E aster
Seals in the mail during the next
few days and he expressed hope
that "they will respond as gener
ously as they can.”
Yost pointed out that the E aster
Seal society assists “only those
physically handicapped persons
who cannot qualify for aid from
any other organization, either pub
lic or private.”
