QUESTION: A couple of years
ago I stopped by the social security
office in our town and they told
me as long as I was earning over
$2080 a year I need not apply for
benefits until I was 72. My friends
tell me there has been a change
in this. Please explain.
ANSWER: A change last year in
the social security law makes it
possible for many more older peo
ple to work and still be paid some
social security benefits. Under the
law as it stands now, you can earn
$1200 in a year and still collect
all of your benefits. When you
earn more than $1200 in a year,
you give up $1 of benefits for
every $2 you earn between $1200
and $1700. For every $1 you earn
over $1700, youg ive up $1 of bene
fits. Your local social security of
fice has a free pamphlet which
shows how much you can earn
and still receive some social se
curity checks. Just ask for pam
phlet 23c.
QUESTION: The other day I
heard on the radio that people
over 65 should visit the social se
curity office even though they
were still working. They also
mentioned that each month that
is delayed may mean loss of some
benefits. Why do they stress not
waiting a month or more?
ANSWER: The reason we stress
visiting the soical security office
as soon as possible is that our ap
plications are retroactive for only
12 months. In many instances we
can pay benefits for all of the past
12 months before the worker ap
plied for benefits. As you can see,
if th? worker delays one or more
months, he would lose a full
check for each month delayed.

day of last week as the HEC la
dies met to do some cleaning. They

ting in the wood. The Grange is
having their booster night Satur
day evening, September 15, at 8
o’clock. Preparations are being
made for an interesting evening

the death of Mrs. Fritz Gindhart
of r.ear Beaverton Saturday. Her

with serious injuries received in
the same car accident. They are

three children have sold their
home in Portland and moved to
Sacramento. California where he
is stationed at the air base.
