H ere are a few basic points to

1. Flea control has no "one-shot”
solutions. Enough insecticide m ust

Q. "A ren ’t fleas on dogs and
cats inevitable? W hat's w rong w ith
keeping m y dog occupied w ith a
little harm less scratching?”-—Mrs.
A.F.K. ,
A. Fleas aren ’t “inevitable”—
and, if you w ere y o u r dog, you
w ouldn't be philosophical about
th e situation.
For one thing, fleas transm it the
interm ediate stag? of tape w orm in
dogs and cats; they cause persis
tent and sore skin inflam m ations
w hich are m ost uncom fortable, and
they also attack hum ans.
Flea control is and should be a
year-round endeavor b ut m ost of
th e effort has ,o be m ade during
th e w arm , dry m onths of sum m er
w hen the flea propogation is at
its peak.
Successful control of fleas d e
pends on attack in g th e fleas both
on the host anim al and *»n the
prem ises w here th e anim al is kept.
Since w e're dealing w ith a colony
of insects, control m ust be aim ed
both at th e adult fleas and at the
eggs and larvae of th e flea.
A dult fleas norm ally spend all
of th e ir tim e on the anim al. They
lay th eir eggs on the skin and hair.
T he eggs fall off and accum ulate

his tim e, his bed. a favorite chair
