Becky Curl, also a member cf the group, did not g 1 in the picture. 200Participate In Parade Event Youngsters from the Vernonia and Mist schools presented an ex cellent centennial parade last Saturday afternoon with about 200 taking part. The entries snowed a lot of work on the part of children and parents and a great deal of ingenuity in think ing up costume and entry ideas. High school, students seemed somewhat reluctant to enter so Robert Weidman and Caroline Fowler who were awarded the high school costume prizes en countered no competition. For the grade school, costume winners for boys were Jim Proehl first and Doug Johnson second, chosen from a group of 35. For the girls, Mary Andrus was first and Kathy Steele second from among 33 entrants. From 19 grade school group entries, first prize went to the Indian group made up of the Curl Mig Champs Go To Jantzen Meet The annual city marble tourna ment sponsored by Smith-Chris- tensen post, VFW. was complet ed at the grade schools this week. The local competition was handled by Dan Lawler of the grade school staff. Winners in the competition were: Class A. 1st Kenneth Bate man. 2nd Jerry Hayes. 3rd Bill Shaw. Class B. 1st Duane Justice. 2nd Gary George. 3rd Harvey Red mond. At Lincoln school: Larry Elton 1 Geff Proehl 2nd and Stan ley Johnson 3rd. Th; winners of first and se cond places in classes A and B will enter the state marble tour nament at Jantzen beach this Saturday, May 23. Members of the sponsoring organization will ta . the boys to Jantzen beach Community 4-H Day Scheduled The Nehalem Valley Commu nity Day for 4-H club members will be held at Vernonia on May 23, starting at 9:30 a m. Activities will be in and around the American Legion hall and the West Oregon Electric Co-op. de monstration kitchen. Demonstra- tions, judging contests and the ju iging of exhibits will take place in the morning Livestock show- manship contests will take place directly across the street from the West Oregon Electric Co-op. of- fiee : Council Hears Proposal for Sewage Plant Commencement exercises for the 40 seniors at Vernonia high school will be held in the high school auditorium Friday even- ing at 8:00 o’clock with Henry E. Tetz, assistant professor of edu cation at Oregon College of Ed ucation, Monmouth, as speaker. Honor speakers for the class will be Carolyn Garlock of Mist and Janelle Thomas. Next Tuesday evening, 36 eighth graders will receive di- plomas in exercises at the Wash ington school. Maynard L. Chris- tensen, president of the Oregon El m ntary Principals association and also principal of Robert, Gray elementary school at Astoria will speak. The Paul A. Gordon memorial awards and the American Legion and auxiliary citizenship awards will be made at this time, also, and a special retirement presen tation will be made to Mrs. Irma Chance who this year completes 40 years of teaching, 29 of which have been in Vernonia area schools. She also will b? honored by faculty and friends at the cof fee hour in the teachers’ lunch room following the graduation exercises. All who have bowled this year and all those in terested in bowling next year are invited to attend Garb Proposed for Event The steering committee for the third Vernonia Friendship Jam boree met Monday evening and reports from committee chair men showed all events shaping up well. Last week, the logging events committee began the distribution of 1000 posters advertising the logging events Don Webb who heads that committee, has a well planned program of events and persons wishing to enter them should contact him. They will take place the afternoon of July 18, Saturday. Centennial dress is expected to be the uniform of the Jamboree week end and all residents are asked to prepare such costumes to really put the event over. It is suggested that ail businesses open have clerks dress accord ingly and offer centennial spec ials for that week end. Carl Schaumburg, chairman for the horseshoe tournament states that it will be known as the second annual Pacific North west Horseshoe Tournament and pitchers from a wide area are expected to enter. Qualifying will take place from 9 a m. to 1 p.m. July 18 for classes A, B and C and playoffs will start immediately after the qualifying rounds There will be first, se cond and third place trophies and in addition, a Schaumburg revolving trophy will be offered which, if won three times will belong to the winner. Barney Hampton was the 1958 winner. Columbia county residents who enter will be classified and play off in the evening for county championship The list of queen candidates is growing and all groups and individuals who have a nominee are reminded that the names and sketches must be filed with Mrs. Lloyd Garlock, Mist, by June 1. 2 Plan Nehalem Canoe Journey A canoe will be launched with great ceremony this afternoon at th? Nehalem river bridge at Riv- ervie w and will then travel down the Nehalem River the 90 miles to the city of Nehalem. The pro ject is being undertak n by Buzz Haag, of Sherwood and David Hain of Portland. Both are 20 years old and juniors at Portland State college. Haag in pre-den- tistry and Hain in pre-medicine. They are members of Adventure Incorporated and their plan is to take moving pictures enroute and offer the film to the Bob Brown show for TV release The launching here will take place at 3:00 o’clock this after noon and representatives from Portland TV stations and news papers are epected to be on hand George Johnson, Vernonia mayor, will give the boys a letter to the mayor of Nehalem, Walter Ran dolph. inviting him and his citi zenry to the Friendship Jamboree July 18 The boys exp < t to reach Nehalem by 6:00 p m. Persons or groups who have nominated candidates arc asked io make sure they are in formed of this time for taking of pictures. 18. With regard to the country store, Louis Towne asks that all who plan to have items for sale contact him. So far. several la dies have indicated they would have aprons, but a variety of items is needed to make it a success. It will be open both Fri day and Saturday. Mrs. Glen Hawkins, window display chairman, indicates that many have reserved space and all other groups or individuals wishing display space should contact her soon. Hobby exhibits, collections of individuals and all such items are of great interest, as has been evidenced the past two years. There will be a sweep stakes cup for the most outstand ing window. The carnival will be in Vernon- ia from Wednesday through Sai urday of that week at the school grounds. - --------- - — Mayor Proclaims 1959 Poppy Day Saturday, May 23, was name 1 Poppy Day and ail citizens were urged to observe the day by wearing memorial poppies in tri- bute to the nations war dead in a proclamation issued today by Mayor George W. Johnson. The proclamation slated: "Remembrance of those wh > gave their lives in defense of our country and its freedom be- ing an inspiring part of our American heritage, and all of us having personal memories < . young men from our city who died in war service, it is fittili . that we keep those memories bright by wearing on one day each year the Memorial Poppi. I therefore am proclaiming Sa urday, May 23, 1959, to be Poppy Day in the City of Vernonia an ; urging all citizens to observe th : day by wearing the Memori: Poppy." Square Dancers to Aid Little League An invitation is issued this week to those who enjoy square danc ing and those who enjoy watch ing it to turn out next Sunday afternoon for the Square Dance Jamboree which will be held in the high school gym from 2 to 6 pm. The affair is a benefit for the Little League baseball program in Vernonia this sum mer and those who attend will not only find the best of enter- tainment but will lend their sup port to a very worthwhile cause for the young boys of the com munity. Three top callers from the Northwest will MC the program which will be in three parts They arc Bud Deputy, Barney Barnas and Mel Stricklett of TV fame.
