2 -THURSDAY, JULY 21, 1949 THE EAGLE, VERNONIA, ORE. TOPICS OF THE TOWN Mr. and Mrs. Kent Bauersfeld left here last Friday for a vaca tion and are spending part of the time at Elk Lake. They plan to W away about 10 days. Mr. and Mrs. Perry Browning and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Larson left berv Monday for Spark lake. Mr. and Mrs. Emil Messing will leave today to join the party and all wiU probably return here Sunday. Alaa there are Mr. and Mrs. Vic Creaon of Newport, former resi dents of Vernonia. Dave Brunsman began his vaca tion last week and he and Mrs. Brunsman and Mr. and Mrs. Frank O'Rourke are spending part of the time at Long Beach, Washing ton. Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Vanderzan- den spent Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Seaside. The weather there at that time was cool. Joy Theatre THURS-FRI. Also at the Messing home were Mr. and Mrs. Ed Hartzell and Mrs. G. H. Hartzell. Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Anderson have returned from California where they spent three weeks visiting their daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. H. D. Thoreau. The Thoreaus live in Los Angeles. Lois Frank began work Mon day in Hillsboro for her uncle, H. Kellington, jeweler. She will be there for the remainder of the summer until school resumes this fall. Mr. and Mrs. Henry John were here part of Friday and Satur day from Sweet Home as guests of Mr. and Mrs. Elgus R. Frank. Johnny Frank the Johns’ grandson, returned with them after spend- a week visiting at Sweet Home. Mrs. A. E. Jennings was in Hillsboro Sunday to attend the district Townsend meeting at which attendance was estimated to be over 200 people. She said that a report released there listed 23,- 636 names signed to petitions to refer the pension bill to voters at the next general election. The Townsendites at the meeting went on record declaring against the lifting of rent controls. G. Wm. Anderson will leave Sun day to instruct at the Christian Church Youth camp at Silver Creek Falls. He will return for services the following Sunday. Pete and Dave Brunsman were in Portland last Friday to attend a refrigerator sales meeting at which was announced a special sales campaign. They were in formed that stoves and ranges are now at the 1939 price level. J. A. Bush, Jr., and daughter. Judy, left here Friday on a two- week vacation trip. They went from here to Los Angeles. O. Libel. Theodore Jackson of Long Beach, Washingtin was in the village Monday looking up old acquaintances of 50 or more years ago. The Jacksons or Jacobsons as they were known, homesteaded over 60 years ago a place we re member well when we came in years later. It had a little cabin partly of logs still left, an old well partly caved in and remnants of a cleared field, now all grown up with brush and trees. Mr. Jacobson stopped at the Knowles farm to renew old friendships. Mrs. M. Wilson on the Burn continues about the same. Mrs. L. Wikstrom and Shirley were movies visitors in Clatskanie Sunday evening. Mrs. Lloyd Garlock, keeps house for her mother-in-law, Mrs. Alma Garlock, while the ladies went to camp meeting. Annie Shedwin and two of her sisters and a niece were in the villarge last week. They are old timers of early days. Some older residents will remember them. Mr. and Mrs. R. Schroder and Peter and Cliff Salmi and Janet from Marshland spent Tuesday evening with the Chas. Hansen family. Mrs. Schroder and Mrs. Hansen are sisters and Mr. Salmi is a brother. Couple to Attend Races in Montana TREHARNE — Mr. and Mrs. Albert Reynolds and family and Mr. and Mrs. Don Reynolds and Velma Snyder spent Monday at the beach. Don Reynolds, Floyd Snyder and Forest Reynolds visited with Mr. and Mrs. Loren Dodge at Portland Meadows Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Loren Dodge and Speed Lusby have gone to Mon tana for the race meets. They expect to be gone three weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Gus Hall from Seattle are staying with her par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Tisdale for a while. Mr. Tisdale is very poorly at this writing. Mr. and Mrs. Truman Daven port visited at Ontario during the shut down. Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Burke and granddaughter of Woodland, Wa shington visited at the Peterson home also relatives at Sunset camp. Beck Thompson was home over the week end. He is employed in Astoria. Mr. and Mrs. Terry Brady spent the week end at Glenoma, Wash ington visiting Mr. and Mrs. Larry Brady and family. Mrs. M. J. Rae from Upton, California is visiting her cousin, Mrs. N. B. Johnson. She came by way of Grants Pass visiting rela tives there. M.H.C. Meeting Date Set for Thursday MIST — Mrs. G. Ellis has spent a week with Mrs. Chas. Hansen. Mrs. Ellis lives in Forest Grove. M. H. C. will meet at Mrs. Knowles next week, Thursday. Members keep it in mind. Mrs. J. O. Libel has her daugh ter, Mrs. Ed Lindberg, and Larry from St. Helens as her guest this week. Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Ward from Clatskanie were in the village Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Merl Tiderman of Jewell were dinner guests Wednesday of the Chas. Hansen family. Mr. Tiderman fell and hurt his shoulder quite badly. An x-ray did. not show any bones broken. D. Steele home. Mrs. Crayle is Mr. Steele’s sister. The people of Riverview extend sincere sympathy to Mrs. Ancel Roberts in the loss of her husband. Mr. and Mrs. Greene are driv ing a new car. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Ilelland and son, Murvin, and daughter, Zada, of Ellensburg, Washington visited at the Rex Normand home several days this week. H H TREHARNE — Mr. and Mrs. Harry Weaver are the parents of a boy born July 6. He has been named Vernon Glenn. A mistake was made in the meeting for the Timber route ex tension unit July 22, Friday, at the Grange kitchen. This meeting is for officers only and not for the whole unit. Some excitment was caused here Sunday when a plane encountered engine trouble landing in Albin Bergstrom’s hay field barely miss ing several houses. Art and Jack Odam have re turned from Alaska where they have been visiting for three weeks. Leann Livengood returned with them for a few weeks visit here with her grandparents. MIST — Mrs. W. Pugh and Mrs. Chas. Hansen were in Forest Grove and Hillsboro Fri day of last week. Mrs. B. E. Troy of Troy’s Bakery in Everett, Washington and her friend came down Sun day and went to see her uncle Austin Dowling, who has beer, ill the month. They went on to Salt Lake, Utah for a couple af weeks. Mrs. Helen Johnson has beer, spending a few days in Forest Grove with her mother, Mrs. Min nie Johnson.
