f THURSDAY, JULY 1, 1948 THE EAGLE, VERNONIA, OREGON TOPICS OF THE TOWN a Mr. and Mrs. Harry Culbertson, Jr., of Corvallis were here to spend last week end with his parents. 8am Gregory of the MacDonald hotel and Mrs. Nancy Tooley ■pent a week at Glendale recently where they visited Mrs. Tooley’s boys. They came back Monday to give the members of the Lions club a chicken dinner. Mr. Greg ory will leave this week for Mil- waukie, Wisconsin to be present for his nephew’s wedding. He will fly and will be gone for two weeks. When he returns, he will announce his definite plans about the MacDonald hotel. K. A. Gustoffson, nephew of A. L. Kullander, arrived here Monday to spend about two weeks viaiting before returning to Stock holm, Sweden. Mr. Gustoffson has been making a tour of the United States as part of his education and will return to Stock holm to complete his studies. DANCE with Freddy Carmichael's Dance Band. I.O.O.F. Ritz and daughter, Maxine, of Pasadena, California are visiting their son and brother, Bill Ritz, and family on Rock Creek, arriving here Sun day. Mr. and Mrs. Billy Olinger of McMinnville joined their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Olinger, Mrs. Helen Roland and family and Mrs. Anna Roland as well as Richard May and Miss Betty Donn, on a recent motor trip to Seaside. Holly Holcomb, Sr., and- Mr. and Mrs. P. D. Leach visited Mrs. Eloise McGee in Longview, Wash ington Sunday. Later in the af ternoon they motored to St. Helens accompanied by Mrs. McGee and visited Holly Holcomb, Jr., and family. Mr. and Mrs. P. D. Leath were in Portland Saturday. Mrs. A. C. Chadd, Larry, Mari- lyn, Twila and Judy, arrived in Vernonia Wednesday, June 23, from North Platte, Nebraska to visit Mrs. Chadd’s mother, Mrs. Anna Partridge, and sisters and families, Mrs. Viola Eckland and Mrs. Luella Eggert and brother, C. A. Cederburg. Mr. Chadd will come to join his family later. L. E. McGee left Thursday for and extended trip to Bellingham, Washington to visit his son, Perry, and family. Mrs. Ida VanBlaricotn accom panied by her daughter, Mrs. Laura Tandy of Portland, went to Portland for a two weeks trip recently. Another daughter, Mrs. Myrtle Coleman, showed her the sights of the flood. Mrs. A. G. Graves and Mrs. J. T. Landers from Russelville, Alabama have been visiting at the A. H. Landers home. They are aunts of Mr. Landers. Week end house guests at the F. R. Olin home were Mrs. V. H. Gowen and daughter, Ann, from Port Blakely, Washington; Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Manning and daughter, Frances, from Portland; Nation’s Economy’ in Good Balance,, Survey Reveals Herbert Olin of Kelso, Washing ton and Robert Olin from Chicago, Illinois. A happy family gather ing was enjoyed. Mrs. Thomas Morgan, former Vernonia resident and now of Forest Grove, is in very serious condition m the Good Samaritan hospital with a hip injury due to a fall following a heart attack. Mrs. G. William Anderson, wife of the new Christian minister, is arriving in Vernonia with thc-'r new daughter, Delanie Jan, this week. Cora Jean Knoedler was hostess to her Sunday school class on her seventh b'irthday at her home Sunday afternoon. Marshall of Kear- ney, Nebraska arrived here last week via Napa, California where she visited her son, Jim Marshall, and his family (former residents of Vernonia). Sty; will spend several weeks with her daughter several weeks with her daughters Knoedler families. Miss Opal Marshall of Cozad, Nebraska is spending her vacation with Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Knoedler. Officer of Air Force Pays Visit MIST—The L. B. Eastman had as their guests a week ago Mr. and Mrs. Del Eastman and Dianne from Gales Creek, and Mr. and Mrs. Bert Lloyd Eastman and family from Klamath Falls. Mrs. Austin Dowling and son were in Clatskanie last Thurs- day. Lt. Milton Henderson of the air force was a caller at the Fred Siegenthaler home Thursday. It was reported he was missing in action over Germany during the war, but he was taken prisoner. He has many medals including the Oak Leaf Cluster. We are glad to see him. Sharon Sundland spent the past week with her grandparents, the Chas. Sundlands. Sharon lives near McMinnville. Mr. and Mrs. Percy Melis ar rived last week at the A. R. Melis home from Sand Point, Idaho, They are staying two weeks to help his father do his haying. Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Libel were home one day last week from Fairview, visiting his mother. MINNEAPOLIS—With average purchasing power continuing high, the economic condition of the coun try is excellent, the monthly In vestors Syndicate survey of “real income” reports. “Real income" is the relationship of revenue to living costs. The buying power of the aver age family is 3 per cent higher than a yea' ago, the survey shows. Balance between wages, salaries, investment income and farm reve nue continues to improve, giving the economy a healthy stability. Barring a major inflationary surge resulting from a new round of wage increases, the average consumer will probably continue to be better off in 1948 than in 1947, Investors Syndicate said. Though prices, particularly of food, are still rising, they are not going up as fast as family income. “All predictions made last year that an early slump was inevitable have beqn proved false,” said E. E. Crabb, chairman and president ol Investors Syndicate, a leading dis tributor of investment certificates “The soundness of the economy has been proved by the way normal balances are being maintained be tween costs and income, and among various types of income.
