Population Increase Revealed
In Counts Taken for 92 Cities
Special population counts taken
for 92 Oregon cities over the
past three years have revealed
a 87.29 per cent increase in res­
idents since 1940, Secretary of
State Earl T. Newbry has an­
nounced.
Combined population of these
cities, each less than 2,000 accord­
ing to the last federal census, is
now listed at 88,231, compared to
64,264 in 1940.
The new figures are used as
the basis for apportioning reve-
ifties payable to cities and counties
under the Oregon liquor control
act and from state highway funds,
Newbry explained. Any incorpor­
ated city having a population of
less than 2,000 may request a
special census to be taken by the
office of the secretary of state,
under a law passed by the 1945
session of the Oregon legislature.
Added to the ranks of Oregon
cities in the 2,000 and above pop­
ulation class
were Redmond,
Gresham,
Oswego, Milwaukie,
Woodburn, Hermiston, Sweet
Home, West Salem, and Nyssa.

Navy ground controlled approach
units in 1947 brought safely to
the ground 2,929 weather-bound
aircraft, of which 148 were civil­
ian planes.

from Clatskanie Monday seeing
the town.
We are told that the Robbins
family is moving away and the
Rodger Quirin family will move
back from the Burn where they
moved last fall. They will oc­
cupy the small cottage belonging
to Roy Hughes and being vacated
by the Robbins.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Foster were
over from Clatskanie Sunday and
visited acquaintances in the rally.
They visited with Mrs. Foster’s
father while here, Mr. H. Jepson.
The Percy Bailletts and Mrs.
L. P. Wikstrom were in Chehalis
Monday for medical treatments.
Mrs. Wm. Bridgers was down
from Vernonia Monday and called
at the Walt Batson home.

club met at the home of Mrs.
Bert Tisdale Thursday, to help
celebrate her birthday. Pot-luck
dinner was served at noon. She
received many lovely gifts. Those

and children, Mrs. Floy Odam and
daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Odam and
son, Mr. and Mrs. Schooley, Bert

mand was called from California
by the illness and death of her
father, Mr. Riley.
Mr. and Mrs. Harve Whitmire
and children from Castle Rock,
Washington spent a few days at
the Whitmire home last week.
Mrs. Flora Whitmire returned
with them for a couple of days.
Mrs. Zella Davenport and Mrs.
Flora Whitmire were in Hillsboro
Tuesday.
