More Licenses
Issued for Cars
Oregonians registered more mo
tor cars by May 1 than they did in
all of last year, it has been re
vealed by Robert S. Farrell Jr.
Over 470,000 vehicles have been
licensed so far this year, and the
total by December 31 is expected
to be well above 500,000. This will
be the first time in the state’s his
tory that cars have passed the
half-million mark. About 360,000
to date have been passsenger cars.
“The current Oregon traffic pic
ture is that more cars are being
driven farther and faster than ev
er before,” Farrel said. "To the in
dividual driver this means he is in
greater danger and has more re-
sponBibilty than ever before.”
With vacation travel swelling
highway volumes to record levels,
motorists are being reminded to
take it easy on that gas pedal.
Deaths on main roads are setting
new high marks.

For Applications
Represent’tive Walter Norblad
(R-Ore) announced late last week
that the first congressional district
of Oregon will have in 1948 three
vacancies at the U. S. Naval Acad
emy, Annapolis, Maryland, and
one vacancy at the U. S. Military
Academy, West Point, New York.
The congressman has arranged
with the civil service commission
to hold on Monday, July 21, 1947,
a preliminary qualifying exami
nation to determine the eligible
candidates of the first Oregon Dis
trict, which embraces Benton,
Clackamas,
Clatsop, Columbia,
Lincoln, Marion, Polk, Tillamook,
Washington, and Yamhill counties.
Candidates for admission to the
Naval Academy must be not less
than 17 years of age nor more
than 21 years of age on April 1,
1948, unless they have served
honorably for one year in the
armed forces in which event the
age is increased to 23 years. Can
didates for the Military are eligi
ble for admission from the day
they are 17 until the day they be
came 22 years of age, on which
latter day they are not eligible,
unles they have served honorably
for one year in the armed forces
and then may be 23 years of age.
