TOPICS OF THE TOWN
James C. Cay wood, ACMM, son
of Mrs. A. E. Wood, was home
for a week to visit his mother
before leaving last Friday for
Memphis, Tenn., to get his dis­
charge from service. He will have
completed 10 years in the navy,
18 months of that time being
spent on war duty in the. Pacific.
He plans to return here the first
of the coming month.
Ray Mills, who is attending
summer school at the University
of Oregon at Eugene, was home
last week end. He is taking
courses in public school building,
basic school organization and au­
diovisual education. His classes
will end about one and ane-half
weeks from now.
Tom Gosa, former employ of
the ' Inman-Poulson Lumber com­
pany who worked here before
1929, was a visitor here late last
week. He is residing now at To­
ledo.
Mr., and Mrs. G. L. Smith from
Long Beach, California, will spend
two weeks here visiting the H. A.
Thackers. They arrived a week
ago Sunday. Mrs. Smith is the
former Betty Thacker.
Mr. and Mrs. Gene Shipman
and sons, Bill and Pete, and Mrs.
Mossman spent the 4th of July
at Aloha where they visited Mr.
and Mrs. Douglas Niles.
Mr. and Mrs. Ray Robertson
are the parents of a boy, Donald
Ray, born early last Saturday
morning at the Forest Grove hos­
pital.
Mrs. Etta Warring and Mrs.
Evelyn Waring have left for their
home in Oakland, California, after
visiting here with Mrs. Lulah
E. Fullerton.

Lane were here from Roseburg
during the past week.
Mr. and Mrs. F. R. Wills from
Seattle, and Mr. and Mrs. Chet
Alexander from Vernonia, visited
their mother, Mrs. I. E. Knowles,
during the week end.
Mrs. Austin Dowling and son,
Bernard, spent the 4th at Long
Beach, Washington.
Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Keaton, and
Elsie, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Kin­
sel and baby all from Roseburg,
and Mr. and Mrs. Buddy Keaton
were guests at the Bridgers’ home
during the week. They all went
to Seaside, leaving for home Sat-
urday.
The L. P. Wickstrom family
spent the 4th at Seaside.
Shady Lane was in the village
Saturday.
Wayne Kyser is working at
Hebo. He was here over the
week end.
Mr. and Mrs. Willard Garlock
and Mrs. Bern Bliss visited Sun-
day, with their parents, the Ray
and W. M. Garlocks. The guests
live near Tillamook.
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Batson
Mr. and Mr». Lloyd Setsman and
children of Jewell visited in Ver­
nonia the 4th of July at the
home of Mr. Sessman’s parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Ed Sessman.
Rev. and Mr». Baker, Mr. and
Mrs. Roswurm, Mr. and Mrs.
Johnston and Mrs. Dent were July
4th dinner guests at the home
of Mrs. Kate McDonald.

Joe Finnerty, former manager
of the Safeway Store, was here
over the week end visiting with

He is now located at Beaverton.

tertained four couples at their
home with a dinner July 4th. The
guests were Mr. and Mrs. G. H.
Hartzell, Mr. and Mrs. E. H.
Hartzell, Mr. and Mrs. H. H.
Sturdevant and Ellen Hanlon and
Jack Shortridge. The party spent
that evening at Hillsboro.
Air». Ollie Roberts, who has
been ill for the past five weeks,
is showing considerable improve­
ment the past few days, it is
reported.
Mrs. John Rosa, mother of
Bud Borton, is recovering satis­
factorily from a recent serious
operation which she underwent
three weeks ago Tuesday at the
Good Samaritan hospital.
M*rs. Nettie Alley, anistant
nurse officer in the U. S. public
health service, arrived here Mon­
day to spend about three weeks
visiting friends in this part of
the state. She is stationed at
Cheyenne, Wyoming, and is act­
ing as tuberculosis nursing con­
sultant for that state, Miss Alley
was formerly county nurse for
Columbia countq and has many
friends in this area.

Will Duggin» of Bakersfield,
Califomii, left Tuesday after a
three-week visit with his sister,
Mrs. Robert Spencer. He also vis­
ited old-time friends and enjoyed
fishing and clam digging. Mr.
Duggins plans to stop and visit
other friends and relatives on his
way home.
Mr. and Mr». Jack McGown en­
tertained on the 4th for Mr. and
Mrs. Harvey Christensen, Mrs,
Olive Powell, Ernest Herman,
Mrs. Edna Brose, who is staying
with the McGowns, and John Pe­
terson, brother-in-law of 1 Mrs.

Mrs. H. W. Sherman, who is
visiting her sister, Mrs. Fred J.
Tousley, will leave Friday for
Chicago. Upon completion of her
visit there she will return to her
home at AIcAlester, Oklahoma.

Atcherson of Seattle, relatives of
the Austin Dowlings.
Mrs. J. Houry spent a few days
last week in Seaside, Mr. Houry
going down after her the 4th.
Richard Hagen, brother of Mrs.
H. H. Sturdevant, stopped here
part of Monday and Tuesday to
visit before continuing to his
home at Roseburg. He had just
returned from Minneosta, his and
Mrs. Sturdevant’s’ home state,
and reported that crops were
flourishing in that region.

Maude Sollin to Portland Tues­
day where she will take care of
her daughter ana the new grand­
daughter who are coming home
from the hospital Friday. The
new arrival is the daughter of
Air. and Airs. Tony Carlson who
lived here. Mrs. Carlson is Airs.

spent a few days at the home
