A Safe Place to Trade ■ph. 342 Vernonia Helping Circle Meet Postponed MIST — The Mist Helping Circle has postponed its July meeting until the 4th week in August. Mrs. Walter Mathews was called to Vernonia by the unex pected passing of her father, Mr. H. M. Condit. Community sym pathy is extended to her. Callers from Astoria at the Dowling home a short time ago were Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Fallner. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Roper and Shirley Ann paid a visit to the dentist’s office in Portland a short while ago. Mr. and Mrs. Raymond MeGee and Bonnie Ray were recent visitors from McMinnville to the domicile of his parents the L. E. McGees. The Wikstrom family spent the 4th at Florence. The Mist Helping Circle met two weeks ago Thurs. at the home of Mrs. Ralph George and 17 members were present. The meeting date fell near the birth days of two of the members, Mrs. Eva Garlock and Mrs. Dowling. These events were celebrated by a large cake and the strains of “Happy Birthday.” Lovely gifts were presented to the two, a beautiful robe being given each by the Circle. Mrs. Dowling re ceived a dripolator and Mrs. Gar- lock pillow slips, dishes and an apron. Mrs. Dowling also ro- ceived two pictures for her col- lection, in which there over 200 pictures .from all parts of the globe. Not a great deal of bus- iness was on hand so after the regular formalities the meeting was adjourned. The Don James family were recent visitors from Portland. The C. O. Hayden family vis- ited in Seaside a couple of weeks ago and had an old fashioned clam hunt with the familiar clam gun and all. Something to look forward to—a toneilectomy but Mrs. Harry Reynolds has probably had it done by this time. Johnson Sozoff was a business caller in Forest Grove and Hills- boro before the 4th. Mr. and Mrs. Philip Landauer and children of Hillsboro arrived at the Norbert Pelster home early Sunday morning, July 1st, and both families attended Mass at St. Mary’s church in Ver nonia where M. and Mrs. Lan- dauer were sponsors for Dolores Josephine, infant daughter of the Pelsters, when she was chris- tened by Father John Goodrich. Later the Landauers motored to Seaside for an outing. A sort of a second honeymoon was enjoyed by Mr. and Mrs. T. C. Biggs in Bellingham, Wn. They went there for a visit with Mr. and Mrs. John Finley, form er residents here, who moved to Bellingham two years ago. Mr. and Mrs. I. Diemert of Portland spent a recent week end at the John Elder borne. John was spending a vacation from his work at Lebanon and Mr. and Mrs. McKenzie and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lang and granddaughter all of Portland also visited at the Elder home. Mrs. Jeff Breedin arrived from San Francisco for a leisurely visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Huntley. Her husband who is in the service expects a furlough soon and »will join her here. Soldiers Learn of Close Friendship RIVERVIEW — Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Bays of Portland while visiting relatives and friends in this vicinity called on Mr. and Mrs. Riley Hall a week ago Thurs. While visiting her mother in Portland recently Mrs. Robert Wyckoff met an old pal and former schoolmate, Mrs. Paul De- Shaw who related to her an ex- cerpt from a letter she had re- ceived from her husband in Ger many. He stated that while at tempting to make ‘small talk’ with a buddy he had asked him where he was from. “California” was the reply, followed by, “Where are you from?” “Port land, Ore.” Buddy answers, “ My wife’s folks live in Portland.” After a few more exchanges De Shaw found he was talking to Pvt. Robert Wyckoff, whose wife was his wife’s very dear friend, and that Robert also knew Mra. DeShaw before her marriage. Mrs. J. A. Wirtz spent Wed. two weeks ago, with her daugh ter, Mrs. R. C. Kemper and family near Forest Grove and had1 a visit with her daughter-in- law, Mrs. Bertha Wirtz of Port land who arrived that p.m. for an overnight visit at the Kemper home. Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Peachey motored to Longview recently, picked up their daughter, Mrs. C. R. Shepard, her husband and two children and went on to. Tacoma to help Mr. Peachy’s mother, Mrs. Alice Boltinghouse celebrate her 93rd birthday. The aniversary dinner was spread at the home of Mr. Peachy’s sister, Mrs. John Carey and was enjoyed by all. Albert Huntley, who is working in Scappoose is book-learning aviation in his sparetime and has been in the air twice for instruc tions. We have a new family of neighbors to welcome. They are Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Crume and sons, Danny and Denis, who come from Glenwood and are getting located in the Olive Pow ell property recently vacated by the Hensler family. Mr. Crume has already started working with his uncle, C. I. Anderson, in the wood working business. Mr. a„d Mrs. George Bell and daughters, Polly and Bessie, their son, Kenneth, his wife and children, Bonnie Ratkie, Virginia Robinson and Mrs. Whitsell mo tored to Hillsboro to participate in the Happy Days celebration held there. Mr. and Mrs. Louis Schroeder left Sunday, two weeks ago, for Roseburg where they spent most of the week and celebrated with friends.
