TOWN and FARM in WARTIME ( Prepared by OFFICE OF WAR INFORMATION GASOLINE SITUATION IS STILL TIGHT The average civilian motorist should expect no increase in his gasoline ration for the next sev eral months, at least not before the end of the war with Ger many, the OPA says. Civilian stocks of gasoline built up last winter have been greatly reduced despite increased imports and rec ord domestic production. Civilian grade gasoline stocks have de creased approximately two mil lion barrels in 30 days. ONIONS TO BE PLENTIFUL THIS YEAR Your hamburger sandwich may have gone without onions last year but now there’s no excuse for such a deficiency, because the WFA estimates that this year’s crop will be 45 per cent above the ten-year average, 1933- 42. For satisfactory home storage select good fully dried onions, keep in a well-ventilated, dry place in temperatures as- near to freezing as possible without freezing. Onions store satisfac torily at temperatures from 32 to 55 degrees. Pantry or attic usually is superior to cellar. Never pack onions closely in a closed container. Spreading on a screen placed overhead in a gar age or back porch is good if tem peratures remain above freezing. Good quality onions will keep several weeks under ordinary room temperatures at this time of year. FOOTBALL TRAVEL WILL BE CURBED To restrict football travel, foot ball team managers have been re quested by the ODT to confine sale and distribution of tickets to residents of local areas of cities or towns in which the games are to be played. The ODT also has asked football teams in traveling by train to use coach accomoda tions wherever possible and to make Pullman reservations no earlier than the day before de parture. ROUND-UP The Department of Agriculture says;-Butter supplies for civilians for the last half of this year are estimated to be 4 percent smaller than in the same period last year and the smallest for this period in more than 50 years. . . Civil ian supplies of fresh fruit, frozen fruit and canned fruit juice are substancially larger 'this season than last, but supplies of canned and dried fruits are smaller . . . A few weeks more of favorable weather will give this country the largest volume of crops it has ever produced. The WPB says-Ci'ties and towns are declaring “paper holidays” during which merchants use no bags or wrapping paper except for sanitary or protective puroses . . . The Girl Scouts of America will join the drive for salvage of tin, paper, and rags on October 1 . . . Each Pennsylvania school pupil collected an average of 30 cans for tin can salvage during the six months ended May 31. No rumors of Germany’s sur render should be accepted un less confirmed by Gen. Eisen hower, cautioned the War and Navy Departments and the OWI . . . Five percent of the 27 mil lion Christmas packages mailed to Army and Navy- personnel last year was lost because of faulty packing and addressing . . Be ginning Sept. 22 all gasoline fil ling stations may accept off-high way “R” coupons. . . Production of corn pickers for this year’s crop is larger than for any previous year . . .More than 4,000 automobiles a day are be ing scrapped, to leave an estim ated 23,750,000 cars in operation at the end of the year, according to OWI.
