We finally got out if it by knocking out their guns and when we left at the end of the day Wake Is land was one big mess of smoke and fire. “Then it was back to Pearl Harbor for a short stay before we left again for another big raid this time occupation of the Gilbert Islands, but this time we were sort of bringing up the rear. First we left with a bunch of landing barges which were to be held in reserve for reenforce ments. We took them down to the island of Funafuti which is about 70 miles south of the Gilberts. We stayed there for about five days waiting until they sent word for us. While there the Japs came over on a bombing mission. They bombed mostly the landing strip on the island. We were anchored off shore and dared not fire for fear of giving our po sition away. Then we would have been an easy target for them. Just the same we had to be at our battle stations and got very little sleep. During the day we would go over on the beach and pick coconuts and look at the funny looking natives. When we finally did head for the Gilberts the battle was in full swing but when we got there things were pretty well under control so people, seeing new places while serving your country.
