Vernonia Eagle Mrs. America Meets the War ★ ★ Wltal 'Ifw, fctuf. Wilk ★ WAR _ _ _ _ _ HONRS ____ * Saturday night baths or blue Monday wash days won’t cost Mrs America any more in the future than right now because the OPA is keeping soap prices from slipping out of hand. The new regulation was prompted because is it diffi cu.t fur most consumers to dis tinguish small variations in the size o. soap bars or packages of soap powder since the weight and quality is not marked on most bars. It is the first OPA regulation de ling exclusively with standaids of qual- ,ty and quantity. So you’ll be get ting your money’s worth for every purchase of household soap—toilet laundry, flake, chip or granule. Cheese sandwiches appeared to le doomed a year ago because it was doubtful whether we would have enough cheese to go around for our Allies and for lavish home use. But now there’s plenty of cheese for American tables as well as for our lease-lend needs. That makes is an opportune time to take advantage of the abundance of cheese because it’s a nourishing food at low cost. The OPA con sumer division declares that the housewife who buys food when if is plentiful rather than using foods limited in supply is helping the war effort. So start planning men us: that call for cheese and more cheese. Thursday, July 30, 1942 Tractors and motors will never wholly replace the Army Mule as a factor in the mobile units of our army. The Army Mule is a tradi tion and the “mule skinner” is a breed unto himself. Army Mules are used by the Field Artillery and the Cavalry in areas where the terrain is rough and tractors cannot operate. FIGHTERS ON THE LUMBER FRONT (1) Each American fighting man requires the work ot ten in war supply and production, and the people ot the West Coast woods and mills are in the front rank of the ten. Above, a head sawyer and-log carriage crew start the process ot producing decking lumber tor fighting ships. (2) Ship decking, long clear lumber ot highest grade, cut. dressed and kiln-dried on rigid speci fications, is carefully loaded for shipment by rugged men skilled by long'training. (3) Young women are now generally employed in the lighter work ot the West Coast lumber industry. These two ladies of the woods are bundling short lengths that may be used in war iftdustry housing. Practically every element of the war effort needs some sort of lumber. ture the . ame quantity as in 1941, but the number of marketable units ire to be cut down so it looks as if you’ll be buying cosmetics and toiletries in larger packages. The government experts’ an swer for the prudent and patriotic is: “Share the cost of war through taxation, pay your debts and put the balance in war bonds and stamps to help pay the cost of the war and to accumulate savings that you will' need when the war is over.” Wartime difficulties of import ing fish liver oils from Norway won’t keep your son in Uncle Sam’s air corps from getting the vitamin A he needs to increase his night vision. California fishermen are bringing in valuable shark livers which produce an oil with thirty times the potency of cod liver oil. Likewise the new California shark liver industry is helping fill Lend- Lease shipments to Britain where this oil is used to enrich margar- ins. Incidentally, this also means a new source of shark fins for Chin ese restaurants to use in shark fin soup. Pack trains in mountainous sec tors are often necessary and here the mule, slow but sure-footed, plays an important role. Our Army buys thousands of mules paying from $175 to $190 for each. The mule eats less, carries more, and some de clare is smarter than the horse. Your purchase of War Bonds and Stamps helps pay for these Army Mules.
