Thursday, May 21, 1942, Vernonia Eagle, Vernonia, Oregon NEW USE FOR BALD HEAD News of the 1 heatre FIVE DAYS TO FILM SCENE Noel Coward is not only a ver satile and prolific playwright, ac- tor and producer, but a song writ er of outstanding note. “We Were Dancing,” Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer picture starring Norma Shearer and Melvyn Douglas, takes its title from one of Coward’s delightful waltzes, which is also the theme song of the film. The picture is based ir pa t on Conrad’s New York stage hit, “Tonight at 8:30.” Romantical and tuneful, the waltz is highlighted in the opening scene of the film. A dance number was built around it, with Miss Shearer and Douglas falling in lovs at sight to its lilting refrain. The c< mbined dance and love scene to gether required five days to film. Hollywood can find a use for everything—even a bald head! Morgan Wallace, veteran stage and screen actor, whose head is as bald as an ostrich egg, recently found a new use for it at the Metro- Goldwyn-Mayer studios. For a scene in “Design for Scan dal,’’starring Rosalind Russell and Walter Pidgeon and currently show ing here, little Bobby Larsen paints Wallsce’s head with water colors in the . ilm. Wallace, whose head has been shining for years before cameras, revealed that this was the first time it had ever been used as a canvas! traditional in these western films that while none of the boys really get the girl in the end, all of them are active candidates for her heart and hand. LEADING LADY TO THREE RABID FOOTBALL FAN Roscoe Karns, featured in Re public’s “A Tragedy at Midnight" likes working in the movies—but he likes football much better. Un fortunately for Republic, “A Trag edy at Midnight’’ was filmed in f rotball season and Republic had to “shoot around” him every Satur- dray afteAoon, fulfilling special terms in his contract. Karns frequently travels with the U.S.C. football team and has ac- companied them to South Bend for the Notre Dame classic eight times, When it comes to active participa- tion, however, he prefers squash and handball. Being leading lady to three dif- ferent men at once is the task as- signed to lovely Lois Collier, ap pearing in Republic’s “Outlaws of Cherokee Trail.” Tom Tyler, Bob Steele and Davis NEWEST SYMBOL OF VILLANY comprise Republic’s “Three Mes- In the early days of movies ev quiteers” starring trio, and it is ery heavy wore a curled mustachio and a sneer.
