Thursday, Feb. 12, 1942, Vernonia Eagle, Vernonia, Oregon a est to give to the Victory Book campaign. Following the St. Valentine’s day motif for decorations, the Little Dance club will hold its fourth dance of the season on Saturday night. Portland music has been engaged for the affair which will be held in the I. O. 0. F. hall. The dance will not be costume as was originally planned. Valentine Party Given By Business Women— A Valentine party was held Tues day night by the Vernonia Business Women at the home of Mrs. Elmore Knight who was assisted by Mrs. Walter Mathews was hostess. In charge of the entertaining games of the evening was Mrs. Jake Boss. Valentines were also exchanged. On February 24, Miss Anna Mae Ramey and Miss Sylvia Claggett will be hostesses and Mrs. Ina Scott will be in charge of the pro gram which will deal' with the topic “Relaxation". Evangelical W. M. S. Plans for Service— Members of the Woman's Mission ary Society met last Wednesday at the Evangelical church for its reg ular monthly meeting. Devotions for the meeting were led by Mrs. H. R. Scheuerman on the topic, “Fellowship of Love and Prayer.” A chapter from the study book, “The Seed and the Soil” was re viewed by Mrs. Judd Greenman. At the business session presided over by Mrs. Minnie Malmsten, re ports were heard from the various circles and plans for the World Day of. Prayer were discussed and com mittees named. The Day of Prayer is a union service at which ladies of the Christian, Evangelical and Assembly of God churches meet for a pot-luck luncheon and a worship program. The W. M. S. also voted to pur chase a book and the Reader’s Dig Members of the American Leg ion Auxiliary will meet Monday evening to witness a special pro gram dealing wtith Ameri<*aniam and National Defense, it was an nounced this week. Air members are urged to at tend at that time. Two Take Page Rank Monday— Jack Heenan and Wendell Kup- ersmith were initiated into the Page Fank of the Knights of Pythias at Harding Lodge Monday evening. Attending the degree work in addi tion to members of the Vernonia lodge were John L. Foote, Claude Poff, Hall Myers, Clyde Watson and Martin Burlingame from St. Hel ens. Phone 466. 6t3—• Church Services Held at Camp CAMP McGREGOR—There wa3 a church service last Thursday eve ning at the schoolhouse, Rev. Hunt of Vine Maple conducting the ser vice. Mr. and Mrs. H. Kangas and her sister, accompanied the minis ter. Mrs. Kangas played the piano accordian and they sang special numbers. Everyone is welcome to the services every Thursday eve ning at 7:30. Mrs. Nels Westlund and Juanita Parker visited their sister and aunt, Mr« B’’P Mason, last Thursday. Mrs. Margaret Nickels visited her -'au'rbter end son, Mr. and Mrs. Al fred Bemis, over the week-end. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Lund at tended the funeral of Ellis Carlson in Portland last Saturday. C. Seymour, state club leader in the O. S. C. extension service, has just announced. The program is a wartime revision of a similar one which the 25,000 Oregon 4-H club members and the 3000 local club leaders have been conducting for more than a year. The seven points are (1) inter preting to the community the four freedoms; (2) producing and con serving needed foods in 4-H club projects; (3) saving for victory— prevention of waste; (4) develop ing individual and community health; (5) learning useful skills and volunteering for civilian de fense work; (6) practicing demo cratic procedure; and (7) partici pating in discussion groups and other organized community activ ities. Come and help your community. Mr. and Mrs. William Bridgers were visiting in Vernonia Sunday at the Ray Mills home. Mrs. William Bridgers attended her cousin’s wedding in Portland last Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Hughes were in Portland Monday. A lot of trucks are busy hauling rock from the rock quarry on the Clatskanie-Mist road back of the old crusher to the new crusher on the L. Backman place to be crush ed. Some of the boys are being call ed for army duty. Among them is Sonny Osborn who left last Friday. Oscar Jones called on the Dowl ing folks Sunday. L. Wikstrom and Sonny were at home from Taft over the week-end. E. Roper’s mother and brother were here from Tillamook over last week-end. Austin Dowling is at home with a cold this week. Mr. and Mrs. Chet Larson were in Clatskanie Saturday as also were Mr. and Mrs. Joe Roeser. Walt Batson was a business visi tor in Portland Friday. It’s a little hard to get adjusted to the “new” time, but suppose time will get us use to it. Helpers Needed Anyone who would like to nelp and give a few hours of their time either night or day on the Observa tion duty should get in touch with either 'Charles Sundland or Mrs. Roy Hughes. Help will be much appreciated. Mrs. and Mrs. N. Moses were business visitors in Clatskanie Thursday afternoon. Ray Garl'ock made a business trip to Taft Sunday afternoon. Mrs. L. Wikstrom and son, Nor- vin, were in Clatskanie Saturday evening. Floyd Deeds was here from Portland Wednesday for a visit with his mother and grandmother. A friend accompanied him. Mr. and Mrs. Acie Trotter were visited by his brother, Newton, and wife Monday evening. The Mist Helping Circle will meet the fourth Thursday at the home of Mrs. Fred Siegentnaier with Mrs. Galeton as hostess. A sister of Mrs. Siegenthaler from California visited her for sev eral days last week. The Nehalem Unit of County Demonstration met last Friday at the home of Mrs. Harry Reynolds. Mr. and Mrs. Chet Alexander were down from Vernonia Saturday evening visiting her mother, Mrs. Irving Knowles. Mrs. Newton Trotter came up from Elsie Tuesday and visited her mother. Mrs. Dowling. Ed Reynolds left last week to work for Reed Holding at Elsie. Bernard Dowling and Carl Ray were in Portland last Thursday. George Kovach was sick with a cold recently.
