4 Friday, May 2, 1941, V< ionia Eagle, Vernonia. Oregon Comments ¿fe Week WHY NOT INCORPORATE THE TWO TOWNS? Within the past few weeks homes in Vernonia have re ceived circulars, or handbills as you may wish to call them, from a business firm in Buxton. The circulars have made their appearance on porches regularly each week to tell thote who read them that prices and items in that store can not be beat en. Whether those prices and items can be found in Vernonia stores would be difficult to determine unless considerable time was devoted to a comparison. But that is not the intent here. The appearance if the circulars brings to mind a suggestion, highly impractical it is true, which would make the distribu tion acceptable. Buxton is a community in itself, removed from Vernonia by approximately 15 miles and located in another county. To make the circular distribution acceptable, Buxton should become an incorporated part of Vernonia, should pay taxes here, and should support community enterprise. On the other hand Vernonia merchants might retaliate by a similar use of handbills in Buxton and might go even further by offering free bus service to residents of that community so they might do their trading here. OURS IS A SORDID WORLD Ours is a sordid world even on this side of the ocean. Some of those on the other side have their homes and families, their dearest possessions wrested from them. But when a kindly, elderly lady, whose biggest pleasure in life is her flowers which she, with eyes almost without sight and with a back bent with age and deformity, has planted and carefully tended, has gor geous tulips deliberately cut with a knife and gathered by a thief’s hands, this world is a sordid one. Acts like that leave a very bad taste. It is hard to believe that in this town, one as sweet and kindly as Grandma Sitts should be the victim of such inconsiderate thieving. Flowers are Grandma Sitts’ Life. A TRIP TO THE EXPERIMENT STATION Every year a trip is arranged so that farmers may view the work being done by the Clatsop county experiment station to learn new developments from the work being carried on there. Those visits have always proved valuable in the past and the visit this year will undoubtedly be profitable. One of the things to be seen this year will be a variety of legumes and grasses suitable for both pasture and hay. COUNTY NEWS St. Helens NEW ASSESSING SYSTEM DOES JOB— The new “write your own ticket” method of obtaining assessment of ’ personal property inaugurated by ’ Columbia county this year has i worked so well that listing of per sonal property will be virtually completed by next week, a good 3% months ahead of previous years, Assessor Fred Watkins said recent ly. Of the 2700 blanks mailed out to county property holders, a little more than 2,000 have been filled out and returned, while the activi ties of men now in the field as sessing real estate will probably result in the return of most of the remainder, Mr. Watkins said. And they found that their constituents were really insistent that nothing, not even strikes, should be allowed to interfere with production. The result is that the “cooling off” period got many solons heated up. The first big strike will find Congressional sentiment just about as near the boiling puint as before.
