FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 1941 SPORTS By ves Dates Chocolate Coeds, IWA Quintet Sunday, February 23 World Champion Basket ball Teana to Play at High School Gym The Chocoiate Coeds, world gi’l basketball champions, will play the IWA here Sunday afternoon at 2:30 at the high, school gymnasium Denny Ryves, IWA manager, an nounced Monday. The Coeds have become a national sport attraction due to the number of victories over c her teams this season, Six girls c imprise the team’s roster of play- er::: Helen Smith is a graduate of Lemoyne college, Memphis, Tenn- essee and was featured at the Cen tury of Progress at Chicago as the t'll'cst girl in the world. Since Helen joined the coeds she has an all-time record of 1400 points for 81 games played and is rated as the best girl center in the world. All-American Kate Bard, forward, is a charter member of the coeds. She is a mem ber of the current All-American team and has been picked the last four years by a majority of sports writers. Kate has never been held scoreless in 10 years of competi tion. Be:mice Marshall, known as “Midge” or “The Mighty Atom” due to her small size, comes from the famous Oberlin Coeds, CAAU champs. Since joining the national champs she has reached the pin nacle as a scorer. She is always in the game and is really the spark p ug of the team. Marge Jackson, known as “Stone wall Jackson” for her great defen sive play, comes to the Coeds from Clfcrgo U. Lulu Porter, former grass court ternis champion and all-around gi:l a l lete, is rounding out her fifth season with the champs. She is a great scorer. Has Met Hitler Tvde Pickett, internationally known girl athlete, was a member of the U. S. Olympic team the Iasi ’wo times and had the unique dis tinction of meeting Herr Hitler. M's Pickett will tell about this meeting during half time. She will also give a hurjle and running ex hibition. The Coed team's recoul for th:s season is 37 victories against gi 1 te ms, 10 wins aga’ns’ m n teams and 8 defeats. Astoria Team To Play IWA o' Denny Ryves, IWA baske'ba.l team manager, announced Wed nesday th. t the powerful mode n Ca b basketball team of Astoria is scheduled to play the IWA here Thursday, February 20th. The game is to be played at the high school gymnasium and will start at 8 o'clock. Post Office - 36 20 16 36 Town Team 19 17 Sam and Bob 10 26 36 Sam and Bob’s bowling team served the banquet Wednesday evening to about 28 players on the other three teams as the result of the recently completed bowling schedule in which Sam and Bob finished at the bottom. The banquet, served at the I. O. O. F. hall, was financed by each player who contributed 15c for each night of scheduled play to make a fund of $43.20. Practically the entire amount was spent in prepar ing the “feed”. Teachers Form Boiling Teams A drawing to determine the per sonnel of two bowling teams made up of giade school women teachers was held this week and resulted in the organization of the follow ing two teams: Team 1: Ina Scott, Doris O’Connor, Velva Ramsey, Mil dred Weed, Rose DeMacon and sub stitute, Shirley Wiegal. Team 2: Jane Lovett, Grace Ccndit, Mary Fossatti, Marian Schreiber, Nedra Young and substitute, Wilma Jacoby son. The two teams, so far the only organized women terms in Vernonia, have their first battle Thursday night.
