FRIDAY, AUGUST 26, 1938• LET’S BE SOCIABLE Former Local Folk Picnic at Longview— Over 60 former Vernonia and present residents gathered last Sunday at Ames’ Coweeman park near Kelso to enjoy the day golf ing, swimming and picnicking. Reminiscing appeared to occupy a great portion of the conversa tion. The picnic this year eclipsed last year’s affair from an attend ance standpoint, it was reported. The purpose of the trip was to give the girls an opportunity to camp out five nights in order to receive honors in camping. They also received honors in fire build ing and cooking over an open fire. The girls enjoyed a hike to Tilla mook head, swimming in the surf, bicycle riding oyi the beach a scav enger hunt, roller skating and a weiner and marshmallow roast. In the group were Lottie Reich, Opal Scheuerman, Martha Tapp, Kerry Soejima, Gwendolyn Graves, Lillian Laird, Dorothy Millis, Leola Fitzgerald, Ethel Parcells and Fran cis .Cantwell. Betty Olsen and Franque Fitz gerald were unable to attend. The girl's camped at Neawanna park. Birthday Observed— A surprise chicken dinner, arrang ed by A. B. Johnson, for his son, Harry Johnson, was an event of Tuesday evening at the litter’s home on Rose avenue. The dinner was planned by the elder Mr. Johnson who served as host during the evening. The young er Mr. Johnson’s son, Harvey, and the Louis Parcells family were also present to enjoy the birthday ob servance. ' B. and P. W. Club (Conference Planned— The first district conference of the Oregon Federation of Business and Professional’ Women’s Clubs for the club year 1938-9 will be held in Toledo, Oregon, August 28. Miss Dora Dee Oberton, Toledo, Oregon, is conference chairman. Re servations for the luncheon should be made with her and should be received not later than Friday, Aug ust 26. Hotel accomodations will be available at the Lincoln Hotel in Toledo, Oregon. “If you would like one more weekend at the beach before summer is gone, reserve your rooms at Newport which is only seven miles distant. Be sure that you make your hotel' reservations direct and not with the conference chairman,” the announcement stalfes. Members of the clubs are urged to attend if at all possible this first conference to start the year well and get the habit of confer ence attending. The executnve council breakfast will be at 7:30 a. m. in the Lincol hotel grille, and will be followed immediately by the council meeting. The program has been arranged by Miss Hilda Swenson, state pro gram chairman. I.W.A. The event is being sponsored' by the Auxiliary and the public is ex tended a general invitation to at tend. Good music is assured and a great numbtr of prizes will be fea tured. Kindergarten to Open— Mrs. Lulah E. Fullerton’s kinder garten will begin the fall term Sep tember 6. There will be two kinds of instruction given, one for the younger or pre-kindergarten pupils, an-d one for the older class of children. Eagle Initiation Is Scheduled— Vernonia Aefie Eagles expect to initiate a large class of new mem bers Friday evening at the Grange hall during the regular meeting scheduled there. Over 60 men have made applica tion for membership in the last two months. It is expected more will apply in the next two weeks in order that the local group may secure a charter. Birthday Honored— Mr. and Mrs. Herb Counts enter tained with a dinner party August 14 for the birthday of “Grandma” Sitts. Those present for her seventy-eighth birthday were James Bonnick, Mr. and Mrs. Chet Fugate, Omer Nickerson and Ervin Stevens. Returns from County Meet Planned---- Mr. and Mrs. Herb Counts and daughter, Betty; James Bonnick, “Grandma” Sitts and Omer Nicker son visited the Matt Jonhsons of Crooked Creek the past week. The Johnsons’ home is one of vast in- terest as it was built by Mr. John son’s father and the boards were hewn out by hand.
