VERNONIA BRAZING & MACHINE WORKS THAT’S WHAT I CALL REAL I I LUMBER I I fa fi I 5 It’s the kind it pays to buy, too, for even if the first cost is a little more than the cheaper grades, the extra labor required in using cheap er lumber more than makes up the difference. The completed job is also much more satisfac tory when good quality lumber is used. 6 Tipton Lumber Co Vernonia, yah at fumer aaoi Phone 431 I web Or. COST O FTHE NAVY According to data prepared by the Director of the Budget of the Unit ed States but 9.23 cents of every dol lar of federal (i. e. national gov’t.) taxes is used for the maintenance and upkeep of our navy. In fact the en tire military branch of the govern ment, including the army, navy, pen sions, retirement pay, annuities, ¡World War allowances and life in surance claims takes but 37.32 cents of every federal tax dollar. This data is based on the budget estimates for the fiscal year 1925. * . The total estimated expenditures « I for the navy for 1925, for which the •atimated appropriation has since been reduced by Congress was $311,- I 020,050. While this sum is large when considered by itself it is less than one-tenth of one per cent of the National wealth. When considered as insurance against war the cheapness of the premium is well worthy of con sideration. When considered as an in vestment for the development of for eign trade and commerce the amount seems meager for foreign trade of the United States for 1923 totalley $7,959,884,333, of which $3,791,- 938,013 was imports and $4,167,- 946,321, exports. It is interesting to note however, that only 31.4 per cent of the import* were carried in American merchant ships which carried also 38.4 per cent of the exports. u Ä ft CELEBRATE AT HOME JULY 4 AND 8 ¿tlCAPTiveiWí ■« • » r I a 2:00 P.
