The dentist has a duty as a teacher as well as
an operator—to give instruction in the use of the
brush, the toothpick, silk floss, etc. Only about 14
per cent of the people of America make any intelli­
gent use of dentistry.

or soap and water. Is not so important as the
method of using. Avoid, however, any mixture that
contains grit.
10— When cleaning the teeth the greatest care
should be bestowed upon the removal of food and
debris from between the teeth, using a brush with
bristles to conform to and reach the spaces. An ex­
cellent adjunct and a great protection against de­
cay consists in passing silk between all the teeth
and drawing it outward in such a manner as not to
hurt the gum.
11— In use the brush should not be allowed to
pass to and fro from the front to the back teeth
only; but with a short pressing sweep from the
gums to the cutting edge of the teeth. Thus the
stroke in the supper jaw is from the gum down­
ward, while in the lower jaw it is from the gum up­
ward.
12— The force used in chewing food is modified
(1) by the use made habitually of the teeth, (2)
by the loss of the pulp, (3) by diseaae of the peri­
dental membranes. The strength of the teeth is
ample for reasonable stress, but metals, very hard
substances, and some confections should be ex­
cluded.

A Georgia subscriber sends to the
National Republican a copy of the
Times-Jouinal, of Eastman, Ga., con­
taining a dispatch from Cordele, Ga.,
dated February 24th, which states
a transient picture seller was nearly
lynched at Cordele when he was dis­
covered selling a picture in which a
negro American soldier with drawn
bayonet had at his feet a German
soldier pleading for mercy.
Angered citizens claimed they were
enraged because the picture showed
a white man at the mercy of a ne­
gro. The salesman was arrested for
operating without a license. He was
acquitted with instructions to cease
selling the picture. This he did, but
a crowd pursued him and Sheriff
Ward had to be summoned to protect
him.
It seems from this episode that it
the citizens of Cordele, Ga., had been
on the western battle front during
the recent hostilities, they would
have felt called upon to pitch in and
protect the German troops attacked
by American negro regiments. Taken
in connection with the fact that the
federal draft administration bad to
interfere in Georgia to prevent con­
scription boards, in some Instances,
for finding all the white regiments
physically unfit for service in order
that their places in the army might
be filled by negroes, this episode is
an Interesting episode in the great
drama of saving the world for de­
mocracy.

law even enacted by a state legisla­
ture was that enacted by the direc­
tors of the Non-Partisan party cau­
cus by the North Dakota legislature
providing for the withdrawal of all
legal printing from every newspaper

the party in power. This law provid­
es for the concentration of all legal
printing, public and private, in one
newspaper in each county to be po­
litically designated. It has been es­
timated that the amount of printing
thus provided for the maintenance
