Tillamoolc c T ty council meets . layor Brodhead Makes Appoint ments—The Annual Message. Marshal was interviewed at some length on this matter. It was finally decided that the Council would go in a body to the various saloons after the meeting, in order that they might understand conditions existing there more fully and also that they might explain the policy of the administra tion to the different owners. The bridge over the slough on the north side of the city will have to be replaced during the present year, as it will not be safe to trust the old bridge for any ten; igth of time. In the matter of a city hall the pres ent city hall is very unsatisfactory and insufficient for the needs of the city. It a new hell be built it will re quire the incurring of an expense which cannot be met from the or dinary revenues, and this will also probably have to be taken care of by a bond issue. If the people of 'lie city wish to incur this obligation, I would advise that ilbe ta-;:i v.p during the year. The paving suit to which the City is a party defendant, is still pending in the Supreme Court cf the state. The city as a whole is not directly in volved in this, the expense cthe pav- ing being charged against the prop erty improved, unless the city by fail ure to observe the law makes itself liable as a whole for the improve ment. As to the sanitary sewer, it seems to be unquestioned that this was not properly constructed but the time has net arrived for paying for it or ' charging the cost of it to the proper ty owner., as that matter is also be ing allowed to wait pending the de- ci si.- I of the suit involving the pav- ing. Of this group of Islands only those of Bahrein aud Maharak are of auy size. Their importance, however, is out of ull proportion to their extent, for they are the great center of the I'ersiau gulf pearl tisheries, w hich are the world’s chief source of supply for pearls. ‘The sheik of Bahrein is said to nave a customs revenue amount ing to about S400.1KM) per year, which makes him the richest ruler In the Persian gulf. A year or two ngo 1 was chef In n country gentleman’s household in Eng lund The morning after my arrival 1 looked around the kitchen garden, and in the dust biu that stood in the back 305 yard I saw a mixture of food that could have been turned into a first class dinner. 4 In about four quarts of milk that had turned sour were swimming stale I half loaves, drumsticks of fowls, old Imm bones, cold boiled potatoes, trim- I tilings of dough made for piecrusts, tracked eggs, some old codfish and 1.22 some spoiled macnronl. I stopped this lot. sorted It out and. with the help of I a little stock, half a dozen eggs and a hare that had been shot on the es tate, served a seven course dinner for 1.2. a family of ten that night, and the master of the household called me up !.. and complimented me before the,whole family oil the best dinner they had hud for a year. Afterward Ids wife sent for me and told me that, though pleased with the dinner, she feared I had been too ex travagant ami said that her rule was cot to allow more than 7 shillings per head In housekeeping. It was a se vere shock to her to hear I had fed the family on the sins or the cook that had left the day before, the cost being not over nliiepence per head.
