STORM CRIPPLES RAIL
ROAD SERVICE.
Mail to Come in by Stage
from Willamina.
The rain and wind Btorms which
commenced on Saturday evening
and kept up for several days put
the P. R. & N. out of business for
three or four weeks, leaving Tilla
mook County without railroad fa
cilities.
The passenger trains
which left Portland and Ti lamook
on Sunday morning were unable to
get through and on Sunday even
ing the train returned to the city.
The first trouble was the washing
out of a bridge near Buxton, and
this caused the passenger train
from Portland to return to Hills-
born.
Between this , city and
Wheeler there are seven slides, one
of the section bosses having to pack
his speeder over them when he
came to this city on Tuesday
Travel and the mail were inter
fered with the first of the week
owing to the small bridge at East
Beaver going out on Monday morn
ing, but a temporary foot bridge
was erected so that people could
cross on Tuesday.
Postmaster Baker was in tele
phone communication with Chief
Clerk A. S. Rand on Monday, when
a preliminary plan was outlined for
mail to be brought in via Willamina,
but the wires going down nothing
was known here what was being
done. On Wednesday the post
master sent four day's mail out by
the South stage, hoping to meet a
stage at Hebo next day, but which
failed to make
its appearance.
Thursday afternoon
the post
master received the following in
structions :
Postmaster, Tillamook, Ore.
Temporary messenger service
authorized between Willamina and
Hebo three times a week. Leaves
Willamina Thursday and Saturday,
Hebo, Friday and Sunday, after
which will leave Willamina Mon
day, Wednesday and Friday. Hebo,
Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
Dispatch all mail via Willamina
until further notice.
