Honors are even. The Pres
byterian, Christian ami Metho
dist churches are each repre
sented on the school board.
Some years ago there was a
large school meeting with ii.di
cations of a big school fight,
but when it was over everybody
went home feeling happy. We
think that was the case with a
large proportion of those who
attended the meeting on Mon
day.

What a blessing it would be
if the few individuals who bave
a (icrsonal animosity one with
the other would practice sortie
of the tenets of Christianity and
show ri charitable disposition,
or follow the practice of those
who believe in Christian Sci
ence by speaking kindly nnd
not speak ill of one another. It
would then be easy for the pug-
natious citizens to bury the

mid this city.
Had the north
end of the county been success
ful we would have gladly taken
off our hat to Nehalem.
It is
now ti|> to this city to make the
< neniiipment it success, ho much
so that the National Guard will
want to come to Tillamook
County next year.
We want tn add our tok« n of
respect to the memory of Joseph
Effenberger, who died at Ne
halem on Saturday. As one of
the early settlers of the north
part of the county be was a fac
tor in its development, and it ts
to these sturdy pioneers of Till
amook County that we owe a
debt of gratitude for their grit,
industry and perseverance in
their efforts to open up this
section, which was bottled-up
for so many years Most every
body in the county who knew
him ha<i a kindly word and a
warm spot in their heart for
Joseph Effenberger, and it is
fitting, as we see, < ne after the
other, these pioneers pass a way,
that we should express the sen
timent of the
citizens and
speak a word of praise for the
departed pioneer, whose name
we hold in reverent respect
and deplore his departuae at a
time when the Nt halem coun
try is on the eve of a great de
velopment.
To the bereaved
family we add our heartfelt
sympathy.
The “shake up” in this city
on Monday for more competent
teachers in the district school,
brought about by the women
of this city, was a good thing.
We hope the women in other
school districts will also wake
up and see to it that only ex
perienced teachers are employ
ed, for it is juntas important to
have experienced teachers in
the country as in the city
schools. One instance was re
lated to us where a school
board employed a teacher who
bad not even county papers. If
the women of that district bail
turned out on Monday and
''swatted” those who were re
sponsible for employing incom
petent teachers it would have
been the right and proper pro
cedure. A little "shaking up"
of school directors in country
districts for more efficient tea
chers won't do any harm. The
taxpayers are taxed heavily for
education and pay big salaries
to teachers.
But why waste
public money on poor teachers
and who retard the education
of children where they are em
ployed when there are many ef
licent teachers to lie obtained ?
We hope the women of every
school district in the county will
follow the example of the wo
men of 1 illamook City who
turned out on Monday to bring
about, if possible, the employ
ment of more competent, ex
perienced teachers.

Our esteemed Bro., evidently,
had another free trade duck fit
in his endeavor to deceive the
teat pullers of this county, who
have the good horse sense to
know that Tillamook cheese is
still protected by the protective
policy of the Republican party,
and that is the reason the price
remains high and will do so un
til the free trade policy of »lie
Democratic party comes into
force.
Then, and not before,
will the dairymen of this coun
ty know what free trade, with
free milk and free cream, is
going to do with the price of
cheese
We are glad to sav
that Tillamook cheese is selling
at a big price, and we have to
thank the Republican party for
it. The proof of the pudding
is in the eating of it.
When
the free trade policy of the
Democratic party supercedes
the piotective policy of the
Republican party, will prove
what effect free milk anti free
cream will have upon the price
of cheese. We hope not but
there is every reason to believe
that the price of everything
raised on the farm will fall in
values.
