$550,000 worth of cheese, and as Clat­
sop county is equally well adapted
to dairying, this is an industry the
business men of Astoria could learn
much about and then go home and
help boost that industry in their
own county.__________
It is right and proper that prison­
ers serving time in the county jail
should lie put to work on the county
roads, for there is no sense in keep­
ing several able-bodied men in idle­
ness. There is a whole raft of boot­
leggers who should be included in
the chain gang who are too lazy to
do a honest day's labor for a liveli­
hood.
Get busy, Mr. Sheriff, and
put them to work.
Some month» ago the matter of
drawing up a new city charter and
extending the city limita to take in
the railroad depot was freely dis­
cussed, but, somehow, the bottom
appears to have dropped out of the
whole affair and there is nothing

the newly formed Tillamook Com­

waited patiently for many years to
see one phase of the transportation
problem solved. The next order of
business will la- the improvement
of Hoquarton Slough, the channel
in the bay anil a jetty for Tillamook
bar.
We have often prophesied
that Tillamook would lie a second
Grays harbor for lumbering, and
the rapid manner in which this is
coming about is very gratifying.
As the Port of Nehalem had the

The Pacific City Lookout, edited
by H. S. Turner, is the name of a
new county pa|>er published st Pa­
cific City, issued to boost and boom
that seaside resort. We hope, how-
ever, that it will not prove a boom­
erang to that place, for an editor
who |>ersiatently pushes hie anar­
chistic socialistic nostrums to the
front, pulling down and never build
ing up. isn't likely to make a good
booster for Tillamook County’s fa-
mona seaside resorts. Cut it out,
Bro. Turner, snd turn in and l-e a
real live booster and boomer for
Pacific City.__________

We think we remember at one
time that there was rejoicing at the
city on the bay when the Lytle road
contemplated building down Wil-
sen river and making Bay City the
terminus. But it didn't, though.
No railroad building into Tillamook
can afford to close its eyes to the
splendid locations for factories and
■aw mills on Hoquarton Slough and
Tillamook, Trask and Wilson rivers,
and out of the reach of the rough
weather at times on the Tillamook
bay in the winter. We have always
expected to see the bulk of the tim­
ber manufactured around Tillamook
City, and in a few years the places
we have mentioned will become lx e-
hive of the lumber industry because
t ie locations are ideal for that pur-
p >se, and for that reason the Hill
p.-ople are not going to overlook
these facts. __________
It is plain to see that it is going
to tie hard work to get together and
pull together for the beet interest of
Tillamook City when those who con­
trol the Herald are endeavoring to
keep up the factional strife. Anyone
can see that the renewed attack on the
snap shot man and the post office
is for political reasons. It matters
little or nothing to us, for we have
been the target of the “knockers”
and the politicians for so many
years that we have become accus-
turned to it. Anyway, if Bro. Trotn-
bley is content to be the tool in the
hands of those who want to keep up
the factional strife in this city, well
and good, keep on “knocking,”
"knocking,” "knocking,” and help
undo what the Commercial Club is
endeavoring to do to bring about
harmony and united effort for the
up-building of the city and county.
Yet it is well to Btate that the
“honking machine,” with very little
discretion and less brains, has been
the cause of a good deal of strife,
political and otherwise. “Honk!”

Tillamook City should extend the
glad hand to the Hill road, with the
same welcome spirit that it extend­
ed to the P. R. A N. Co.
We men­
tion thia because it is reported that
obstacles will be placed in the way
of the electric road.
Tillamook
County has enough undeveloped
resources to become important feed­
ers for both the Harriman and Hill
railroad systems and a big shipping
trade as well, and forthat reason all
should rejoice because the county
is to be grid-ironed with an electric
as well as a steam road, and we feel
sure that the newly formed Tilla­
mook Commercial Club will give a
helping and welcome hand to the
Hill road. It has already shown a
lively interest in this matter by in­
viting Mr. I.. W. Hill to visit Tilla­
mook.
All doubt as to the road
being built is removed, for it seems
to be the general impression that as
soon as the surveys are complete
the work will be rushed to comple­
tion.

But Tillamook City is thankful for
the spur that Bro. Miller has given
it Yet for all that Tillamook City
is just as liable, and more so, to be
made the terminus of the electric
road as Bay City.
Beaver Grange has passed resolu­
tions opposed to the Republican or
any other party holding conventions
or assemblies. That being the case
it is now perfectly proper for the
political parties in this county to
pass resolutions in opoosition to the
Grange holding conventions. It is
a poor rule that won’t work both
ways. At the last county election
the socialists and the prohibitionists
held conventions and the democrats
held a caucus and nominated their
tickets, but now that the republicans
propose to get together and hold a
convention or assembly for the pur­
pose of discussing republican poli­
cies and selecting suitable candi­
dates to represent them, agreatroin-
pus is made. The Grangers have
no more right to dictate to the poli­
tical parties how they shall run
their organizations any more than
the political organizations would
have to butt in and assume the roll
of dictators and dictate to the Gran­
gers how they shall run their organ-
zations. Fraternal orders, Granges,
church, labor and other organiza­
tions all adhere to the representative
system of conducting their business
and electing their officers, and we
take the position that the republi­
can and other parties should enjoy
the same privileges and enjoy the
same liberties without having to
submit to the dictation of “unscru­
pulous politicians” who may hap­
pen to control Grange meetings.
Not only does the Beaver Grange
assume the role of dictator, but it
proposes to boycott any candidate
receiving a nomination through the
assembly (a representative gather­
ing), but it has no fault to find with
the method adopted in this county
two years ago when a few persons
got together and nominated candi­
dates and made up “slates” for the
socialist, prohibitionist and dem­
ocratic parties in this county. Talk
about political humbug and “un-
scrupulus politicians,” as well aa
freak legislation, surely republicans
have gone through a sad experience
and met with so many defeats that
they should be getting onto the
racket kicked up by the autocrats
who are undertaking to dictate to
the republican party how and in
what manner it shall conduct its
organization and nominate its offi­
cers. We do not know whether there
will be an assembly in this county,
for that is a matter for the republi­
can county committee to decide, and
whatever is there decision all true
blue republicans should abide by.

As to Fishing.
D ear S ir ,—It has just occurred to
me to write a few lineB in regard to
fly fishing in Tillamook, for the bene­
fit of the new comers, the old
Oregonians of course know as
much about it as I do. I wish to
speak in regard to the fishing in
this month or rather, during the
time that the salmon spawn ia
hatching out. During this time if a
man wants an outing with the
chance of may be getting one or
two trout or with an equal one of
hooking a steel head, all well and
good, but he must put out of his
head all ideas of making a big
catch as the trout are on the riffles
devouring the fry as they hatch
out and they have lost no flies.
Before the trout get on the spawn­
ing grounds, say in March and
April, some big catches may be
made, especially at the mouths of
the rivers, but after that the fishing
is poor until the fry get big enough
to take care of themselves.
I have heard of big catches being
made during the time I mention,
but those fishermen can beat me
all to fits. I have cast a fly in the
streams of California and Oregon
for the last 40 years. There are no
two streams that fish exactly alike,
and I am now speaking more es­
pecially of the Kilchis, which river
I have fished for 30 years.

Friday was a half holiday in
Tillamook for the baseball season
of 1910 was officially opened here
with a game between the Tillamook
“ Clam Diggers” and the Columbia
Hardware Company team, of Port­
land, It was a fast and exciting
game from start to finish and re­
sulted in a victory for Tillamook
by the score of 5 to 3.
” Collie” Druhot, the little left-
handed pitcher from Portland,
officiated on the slab for Tillamook,
and he not only pitched an elegant
game for the home club, but he dis­
tinguished himself by rapping out
a two-base hit, with the baees full,
in the eighth inning, which virtu­
ally won the game for the “ Clan
Diggers.”
