not surprise us much that the next
batch oi bootleggers who are haled
before the circuit court will get 30
days in jail and $500 tine on every
indictment. Stick this in your hat
and see whether this does not come

It is pretty humiliating for the
bootleggers to be cast into jail with
a Dago and to occupy the same cell
that murderers Hembree and Nord-

till were incarcerated in. No won­
der that some of them fell humiliat­
ed and cress-fallen.

The “bootleggers” were determin­
ed that the people should not rule
' in Tillamook. What a fool thing to
do.
The people are beginning to
rule, however, and a big batch of
those who opposed the people's will
are where they belong—in jail, and
with a sense of satisfaction all over

a decisive victory over the ‘‘boot­
leggers’’ and the whiskey element.

less places. The seeds of lawless­
ness sown then and since ha.ve
simply been bearing fruit, and that
is one reason why lawlessness is
so prevalent today.
We remember
distinctly a few years ago what
Judge Burnett told a bunch of gam­
blers he had up before him. He told
them that it was the lawless, bad
example they were setting. It is
the same lawless example, and we
are sorrow to say by some of the
businessmen, which is the cause of
the lawlessness amongst the young
people. If a business man can
sell beerand whiskey in violation
of law, he is showing a bad exam­
ple to young men, who soon catch
on and think they have as much
right to violate the law as the busi­
ness men. Or when men gamble—
it is on the increase again- it is
only another bad example for the
boys and young men to follow. So
Tillamook City and County is now
reaping the fruit of a long siege of
lawlessness and bad example set
by those who have run rough shod
over law and order in this county.
And the saloon advocates want to
blame all this upon local option,
when, as a matter of fact it was the
saloon keepers and gamblers who
started and have kept up the reign
of lawlessness for the purpose of
bringing the local option Jaw into
disrepute. And it is the same law­
less individuals who want to run
saloons again in this city.

We want to say this about those
who furnished Sheriff Crenshaw
with evidence to convict the “boot­
leggers,” they are deserving of a
great deal of praise, for the reason
that the people of this county, or we
should have said, the respectable
citizens, want the local option and
other laws enforced. What we need
right now in Tillamook County is a
lot more men with the backbone, the
grit and the patriotism to inform on
those who have been violating the
law. Those who abuse the State's wit­
nesses anp threaten all kindsof ven-
gence upon them can only be class­
ed with anarchists. It needs only
an arousing of the respectable and
lawabiding citizens to route the law
breakers out of this county, which
should be done forthwith, and those
who know were the law is being vio­
lated and can furnish the sheriff
with the evidence should do so as
patriotic citizens and who want to
see the bad reputation that Tilla­
mook has fallen into blotted out.
Let everyone in Tillamook assist the
county officials from now on with
a view to rounding up others who
should also be serving time.
