TILLAMOOK HEADLIGHT, MAY 13, 1909 Editorial Snap Shots. Ruh ! The contract is let to complete the Railroad. Now see Tillamook grow and hear Tillamookers crow. Rah ! rah Hih * ♦ * If the city wins the suit against the cownty it would not be a bad idea to devote the money to the improvement of the water front or the slough. * * * Conspiracy? Kats! Who are the real conspirators in this city ? Who whs it that entered into a conspiracy to spirit away the witness in the Wolfe case. * ft * Wanted, a snap shot man for our con. temporary. One who will guarantee to spoil a dozen films and fail to get one snapshot. Perhaps the camera needed some wireless. Bro. * ft « The remark is made quite frequently since the Johnson fracas, that attorney* who have insulted the court and wit nesscs at the recent term of the circuit court, don’t dare adopt the same tactics when Judge Burnett in on the bench. ft x> ft Sheriff Crenshaw, who made a quick run t<> balem with Nordst.um. the mur der, is deserving of a great deal of credit for the promptness in which he ferreted out the murder, in having the murderer arrested, in obtaining a confession and in taking the prisoner to the place of ex ecution. ft ft It We are wondering, Bro. Holmes, how Bootlegger Langworthv is getting along since he promised to reform. Wouldn’t it tie funny to hear that the converted bootlegger was occupying the pulpit of one of our churches giving hit» experience in the bootleg business. What a crowd he would draw. ft ft ft It is remarkably strange that previous to Lang worthy being sentenced for boot- legging a pitiful plea was made for him that he had no money with which to pay a fine. Poor fellow. But see how soon he dug up $300 and got out of jail as soon QFpart of the fine was remitted But itmight be asked, was Langworthy fined for bootlegging for himself or some body else ? ft ft ft Another attorney, Oak Nolan, had to appologize to the Court and a witness for the insulting manner in which he was conducting a case in the circuit court in this city last week before fudge Gallo way. With the Johnson frnces still fresh in the minds of the people, it gives some idea how certain attorneys attempt to bullboxe the court and witnesses. They evidently thought Judge Galloway was “easy,’’ hence their bluff and bluster and insolence. ft ft ft The justic court in this city is not a ▼cry profitable institution as far as the taxpayers are concerned, for the county court has to foot costs bills most every time it meets. But what's the use of complaining ? The taxpayers seem to like it and are not complaining of the leakages in county funds. But we do think this, that a justice court ought to be self supporting from the fines inflicted and not a source of expense to the tax payers. ft * ft Councilman Talbot, who was fined $5 lor fighting on the street, wants to know what right we had to criticise him. All we need say is. that kind of disgraceful conduct, especially in a councilman, whose duty it is to look after the peace and dignity of the city, is deserving ol more criticism than if a private citizen had committed such an offence. If city officials get into a street fight and dis grace the ci»y in that manner they not only court newspaper criticism, but they should be kicked out of office. ft ft ft If you ask for a Democratic ballot at the polls today, they will hand von a a piece of paper handaome’y ruled, but with the names of no candidates there on. There’s the state to w Inch the once Democratic party has come. No candi dates. no principles, no organization, hardly a name—just a blank.—Oregon ian. This is plain proof that in the last State and now in the Portland City elec tions the Democrats have no use for the primary election law Now see how ac tire they will become hobnobbling with defeated and disgruntled republic.« ns who will carry on a guerilla fight on the re publican party liecause they failed to la id the nomination. ft a ft As the snnp shot man view the sitna- tio •, Tillamook City is wasting a lot of valunb e time in not concentrating its •Herbies on the improvement ol lioqnar- ton slough and the wnter front. Some day thecitixe s will wake up to the fact that they miss”d it when they see indue tries being located on the bay instead of this city been use of lack <»l deep water to this city. As far as Tillamook City is concerned good roads and the advent of a railroad into the county falls into in significance compared with the improve went of the slough and the water front If this city expects industries to locate here and make no effort to improve the conditions, it is going to be badly left, while other places go ahead. We sim ply mention this to show how impor tant It is that these improvements must tie carried out before inducements can be offered to those who want water front age for manufacturiea. « « • The primary election in Portland re suited in ex-Senator Joseph Simon being nominated for mayor on the Republican ticket and ex Judge M. G Munly on the BAY CITY M. Moran has opened a plumbing and Democratic ticket. The lack of interest and the small vote cast seems to indicate in this neck of the woods that republi cans were not very enthusiastic in Mr. Simon's behalf, an*l that he has a hard fight in the coming election, for airrad v it is beginning to be seen that Mr. n will be the locos of another republic» n factional fight, and. in consequence, will be badlv knifed on the d.iv of election. Whether the disgruntled republicans flop to a "dark horse’’ with flipfl »p ear marks or will support JulgeMunlv. re. mains to be seen, Under those cond-» tions th ’»e on the outside cannot think that Mr. Simon has a walk over. Had Mr. Simons’ nomination been instru mental in bringing party unity it would have accomplished a great deal, but. alas, the old. bitter factional fight is to be fought over again, and is liable to bring the party nominee to defeat. It is tbe same old fight, a few individuals want to handle the dairy men's products and money, and they seem to care little what injury they may do to the cheese industry as long as they can ttab, in some way or other, those who are managing, successfully the co operative associations. It is practically the same way with the county court, for no matter what that body does, the Herald publishes untruthful statement, and, no doubt, for want of knowing bet ter, some persons may believe it. For instance, the Herald says : WfiBKK is the R oad R oller ? Where is our gasoline road roller, that was to be delivered in April. The note given in payment for this roller has al ready drawn $95 interest. Will tie whole $2775 be paid bv the countv court next week before the roller gets here ?— Herald. It is well known that one of the stipu. lations when the agreement was entered into last fall, and is a part of the records, that the county was not to pay anv money for the road roller until after it had been shipped in und tried. The lie is nailed in a letter sent by Beall & Co., of Portland, to County Judge Goodspeed, as follows : “In reference to the notice that appear, ed in one of your papers, headed * i\ here is the Road Roller ?” will say that this roller has been in our warehouse here tor four or five months ready tor shipment to vour county at anv time, and we were simply holding it back waiting until vour roads were in such condition that you could use it, and when we shipped down the roller would send an operator with it, and make one trip do the work, and we now wish to say that the roller will come on the next trip of the Argo. We don't see how this paper could con- sistently state that the roller has already drawn $95.00 interest, for as yet we have received no settlement from your countv For the roller, and don’t ex peel any until the roller is thoroughly tried and accepted.” Wood. This is a broad state ment to make, but one has only to watch trout devouring millions of eggs in the spawning groiindsand millions of young rv to prove thia Under these circumstan ces we fail toseeany logic imposing a tax to protect trout. Probably the average State legislator does not know how fool ish it is to appropriate State money for salmon hatcheries and then pass a law to protect trout, the greatest enemy to the salmon industry. Ask any of the State legislators the reason, and they will frankly admit that it was at the instigation of the city sports that trout is protected and a license is imposed. ft ft ft The best bit of news, as far as Tilla mook County isconcerned, that we have hear for a long time is the announce ment that the last contract is let to com plete the railroad, which is t«» give this county railroad connections with Port, 'and in about twelve months. The ad vent of the railroad into Tillamook will bring about wonderful improvements in the county, and "present conditions will change s<> suddenly that a few years will revolutionize things which we have been accustomed to for so many years in this bottled up section of country. New towns will spring up, new industries will be started, new settlers will flock into the county, und droves of pleasure seek ers come into the county every summer to enjoy the cool weather, the beautiful beaches and the mountain scenery. But apart from this, the industrial growth of Tillamook county will he phenomenal. We have repeatedly made the statement that this countv will become a second Gray's Harbor for the manufacture cf lumber, and this will come about at a much earlier date than most people are inclined to think. The old mossback, monopoly, selfish, pull down, lawless spirit, which have been characteristics in a gieat many of our citizen will have to give way to a class who are more pro gressive, broad guaged and law abiding. There is a great future for Tillamook County, especially the Nehalem country and Tillamook Bay. And the same can be said of Tillamook City whenever tin* citizens realize how imperative it is to the future growth of th* city that llo quarton slough should be stTAightened and the water front deepened. This is, however, only a matter of detail. Tilla mook County is going to have a won derful development, and although the dairymen have made it famous for its splendid cheese products, this and the lumbering, fishing, cranberry and other industries will make this county quite a large industrial and commercial center. ■ » Fort Worth, Texas ; or Jackson.
