TILLAMOOK HEADLIGHT, APRIL 1, 1909. Draft Horses. Editorial Snap Shots. Who said that certain parties shipped in whiskey in oilcans ? * » * We are told that one of the bootleg gers who whs recently arrested solicited money last summer. Wonder whether it was for protection ? * * * When you see a bevy of men tagging the well known bootleggers to certain houses in town, it is circumstantial evi dence that the law is being violated. * * * For the information of those who are in the habit of taking «.trip for the benefit of their health previous to the drawing of a grand jury. We want to say that th? circuit court convenes on tbe 19th A.jril. # » » An i still the lawless, undesirable class continue to give the city officials trouble, an I they will continue to do so as long as chicken hearted methods are used in dealing with lawbreakers. * * * It has been raining again. Well, cheer up, it always rains in the spring of the year in Tillumook county to help the grass grow. But, cheer up, v<»u can bi nk on dry weather after the 4th July, not before. St « to Ling worthy.who was run ill for being boozed, told Marshal Kimball that lie obtained the drink from the pool rooms. That should not surprise anybody. But w iat nliout it ? Nothing, Only no one can believe the bootleggers, even if they du till the tiuth. bluster. The fact that an illegal turn seller cannot t* convicted in Tillamook is as a putrid sore on the local legal character, and a shame not only to the bur, but to all law abiding citizens. * * * The Portland and Tillamook Transpor tation Co., in repudiating the contract entered into with the shippers of this county, has not acted in good faith It was a fair and square agreement that was entered into with one of the owners of t he \rgo. w ho came in here to represent the company, and should have been lived up to. No one ex|*cted that the Argo people wculd meet the cut rates of the Sue II Elmore, but most all who were I interested in the transportation matter at the lime, when several members con netted with the Argo made their boast that it they could get the business the) could carrv freight between h<re and Portland for $4. and possibly for $3, a ton, we like people to make good when they talk and boast what they can do. The failure of the Argo |»e«>pk Io abide by their agreement is disappointing to those who were instrumental in getting so large patronage t«»r the new boat. As the Argo people are ei.tirt-lv to blame it seems to us that thee sh< uld reconsider the matter nut no oi c can expect to carry freight at a loss * * « WINTER WOOD. ————— powder Thousands of millions of cans of Royal Baking Powder have been used in making bread, biscuit and cake in this country, and every housekeeper using it has rested in perfect confi dence that her food would be light, sweet, and perfectly wholesome. Royal is a safe guard against the cheap alum powders which are the greatest menacers to health of the present day. BOYAL IS THE ONLY BAKING P0WDEB MADE FBOM BOYAL GBAPE CREAM OF TABTAK SJSSSSESSEZSS The draft horse is getting bigger nnd bigger. In the late 80 » il one weighed over 1,<WO pounds andcamefrom France, it was an event and the horse papers talked about him. with pictures. Today the drnft importer will touch nothing under 1,800 and 3 yeur-olil colls ofteo run up to a ton. The favorite draft breed in America — six to one— is the Percheron of France, it comes from Le Perche, southwest of Paris, and nowhere else. The horse breeders in that district have banded themselves into a guild or union, and decreed that no horse from outside the borders of their district can ever be re- corded as a Percheron in the studbook of the breed. A colt foaled just across the line out of a mare and by a sire cor- rrctly registered cannot himself Ire regis tered. The foundation blood of the Percheron is, or is said to be, Aiab. The French man will tell vou that a Percheron is an Arab made heavy by climate. But whether Arab extraction or not. it is sure that the breed Ims been made heavy by the climate or human selection dur ing the past hall century. The French never dream of breeding to stallions of mixed or unknown blood. But the American farmer who bred his mare to a Perch-ron for a heavy colt usually changes his mind a couple ol years later, puts what he got from the first cross to a coach horse for style, this product to a trotter for speed, and thegrand result to a jack or a mule. As a horse breeder he looks onlv at the out side of the sire (and apparently not so careful at that), and cares little what kind ol blood is running inside. The Nehalem Horss Co's. stallion Flaneur No. 56331, was bred by M. E. Chopette, of Department, ol LaSarth, France. W ill make the senson of 1909 at Tillamook and Nehalem.
