'Tis the little red scarf days Itlr the memory with ‘It might been.' ’’—Osborn (Kan.) Farmer. Strange and almost weird is the cer emonial which accompanies tbe burial of Spanish kings. Tbe pantheon, or royal tomb, is at the palace of tbe Es< urial, situated 3.UOO feet above the level of the sea and some distance from tbe capital. Only kings, queens and mothers of kings are buried there, the coffins of the kings lying on one side, those of tbe queens on tbe other After lying in state for several days in tbe throne room In Madrid an enor mous procession Is formed, accompany Ing the body to the Escurial. A halt Is made ou the way, and tbe corpse rests there for one night. In the morniug the lord high chant berlaln stands at tbe side of tbe coffin and says in loud tones, “Is your majes ty pleased to proceed on your Jour ney?" After a short silence the pro cession moves on and winds up to tbe grand portal of the palace. These doors are never opened except to ad mlt a royal personage, dead or alive. When tbe casket containing the re mains Is at last placed tn tbe vault the chamberlain unlocks It and. kneel ing down, calls with a loud voice “Senor! Senor! Senor!" After a solemn pause he cries again: “Ills majesty does not reply! Then it is true, the king Is dead!” He then locks tbe coffin, gives tbe key to the prior and, taking bis staff of office, breaks it in pieces and flings them at the casket. Tbe booming of the guns and the tolling of bells an nounce to the nation that tbe king has gone to his final resting place. They were placed at Intervals oi about 3di feet and thus held the wlr at a height sufficient to clear tbe only animals of the country, the llama am! the donkey.
