To our way of Editorial Snap Shota. thinking this caps the climax and we hope the city council will use more dis cretion in the future. We are raising no objections to shows, hut we do so to shows of that character occupying the business street. Here, however, is ano ther instance of the business men fooling away hundreds of dollars to bring in a riff raff show, which neither helps the business of the city nor creates a pay roll, something which lillamook City is sadly in need of before it can expect to grow in population. Look at it from any standpoint the riff raff show of last week was on the same order of the fakir shows in recent years. * » * The business men of Tillamook Citv does peculiar things occasionally.which calls for comment. I'hey raised a subsidy ol $40(1 for a few side shows to come to this city and gave them free use of the main streets, and when the show people announced that they were going to show- on Sunday hut few persons in the city had the moral backbone to raise a pro test. When shows of that character go to other towns the.v have to pay a city license like other people and pay ground rent, but here in Tillamook City a sub sidy is raised, the city «¡how license is not enforced and the public thoroughfares are turned over to them. And Tillamook City dots not add one cent to its finance by allowing this. Another thing, why compel the moving picture shows to pay a city license and not the show people ? * * * Engineer Davis expects that the P. R & N Co.’s railroad will be completed in about fourteen months. We hope so and we only express the sentiment ol the peo ple of this county w hen we sav that th»» completion of the railroad will afford a great deal of pleasure and satisfaction. The snap shot man is no pessimist, but we must say that we would breath with more ease if the presidential election was out of the wav. We have no doubt whatever but what the railroad will be completed as soon as possible. But in the event ol Bryan’s election it would not surprise us much to see a slum in the money market and a cessation of work in many places And it would in all pro bability affect the building of the P. R. & N. Co.’s road and other projected elec trie and steam roads into Tillamook. A large number of our citizens take this view of the situation, for there is a lack of confidence in Brvan in the industrial and money centers of the country. In Defence of Local Option. [TO THE EDITOR TILLAMOOK HEADLIGHT ] D ear SIR,—The editor of the Herald thinks that the regulated license saloon would be better than the present system where young buys get bonze and theie is no money coming in the way of ■ eveiiue for street improvement, lights, etc. I would rather walk through mud a loot deep than walk on the lineal pavements that were built from the revenue derived from so cursed a busi. ness. The voices of starving children would cry out against me. I would feel that I was depriving them of the neces sariea of lite in order that I might have electric lights and fine paved street'.;. Before local option went into effect a Irieml came to me and she was sobbing and wringing her hands in blackest des pair, and she said "Mrs. G------ I am go ing to drown myself and children, tor mv husband is drinking and gaiiililiiig and we have nothing to eat or wear." She said “I will end it all “ I said ' There is a cloud in the distance and alter n while il you just wait you will see the silver lining, for you know every cloud has its silver lining.” She said "there i* no silver lining for me.'' I said, “cheer up, I am sure things are going to he better for you later on." Local option carried and in a few months I met her andaaid. "How about the cloud" She said "mv husband lias not tasted liquor since local option went into effect, and we will soon he out of debt, thank God.” I could tell you of dozens of such cases. There ate men in our county that were always in debt when we had the lisence saloon and their families did not have enough to eat, and to-day they are in dependent. Young hoys used to frequent the saloons. One mother came to me and told me that her boy, only fifteen years old, had went to the saloons and had been beastly drunk more than once They had the rottenest gambling joint out side of the lower regions. Everv morn ing the boys in school would hear how much this one lost and that one ¡made Was this not a prettv state ol affairs for the coming men of our land. If you nets every time you pass as you used to and there were ten drunks to one now, and you still have as good side walks as when the saloons were in power and the gamblers had the key to the city. Besides whiskey has caused two thirds ol the divorces in this nation and furnished its county line to l illamook C»ty and secure ' quota of suicides.
