While the returns are r.ot yet in from all over the State, w.e are resigned to our politi cal rating for two years longer, among idiots, insane persons and criminals, sadly conscious of the fact that the ma- jority of men are not yet ready to be stow upon the mothers of the peop’e their rightful heritage of liberty. But we do thank God and take courage because of the existence and bravery of news, papers and men like the editor and his beacon, the Tillamook Headlight. Long may it gleam across the dark waters of ignorance and tyranny ; and may the time speedily come when every county in Grand New Oregon may continue a ma jority of voters, equal in manliness and chivalry to those of Tillamook. A bigail S cott D uniway , President Oregon Equal Suffrage Association. A Practital Cheese Maker. Saturday evening Mr. B. R. Ruger, of Tillamook, arrived in this city inroute to Waldport where he will take charge of the Waldport cheesemaking plant. Mr. Rugar is a practical cheese maker and expects soon to have the plant in full operation. He has had a large experience Jin the cheese making business in Tilla mook county, and from what little he had seen of this county he considered that the conditions were equally as Rood as they were in Tillsmook country and was at a loss to understand why the industry was not as fully developed. This is really a matter that more than pne man has failed to understand, for |hcir seems no plausible reason why the freamery and cheese making industry should not be in the same flourishing londition as in the c<.unties to the north ¡nd south of Lincoln. We hope at no listant day to see this industry fully de ^eloped and that the ’steps now taken >y the Waldport people will bring last, pg and permanent benefits.—Yaquina lay News Reporter. Mrs. Abigail Scott Duniway, President of the Oregon Equal Suffrage Associa tion, showed her appreciation of the Press and the voters of Tillamook coun ty, in a letter received from her, which we give below, as Tillamook was the only county in Oregon which gave the Woman Suffrage cause a majority vote, which, certainly, is gratifying to know that the men of this county are ready to place women on a level with them in the exercise of the ballot. Portland, Ore.. June 4, 1908, Co. At. Senator. Representative. Dairy. d 3 T ? S A • ►> A U 8. Senator. HEADLIGHT. M r . E ditor —I write as one being in terested in both the material and moral welfare of Tillamook Co. Having been a homesteader and still owning mv homestead, I am desirous to see the county have access to the out side world by rail and an improved water com munication. I want to see Tillamook County kept “dry.’’ To that end 1 want to see the state and the United States go “dry.” Until both these objects are accomplished it will be a guerrilla war fare. You had an editorial in your issue of May 21st, in which you speak of the failure of the Anti Saloon league to keep up its fight for the rnaintainar.ee of the local option law after local option had had beeen carried in Tillamook. That is one and only one of the many ways in which local option fails to be an efficient remedy for the evil. Local option is a child that no political party will own. It is a waif. It is no mure of a cure for the evil than was the .Douglas doctrine of Popular Sovereignty a cure for the nationalcrime of slavery. Nothing short of national prohibition of the liquor traffic with a party behind it as was the Republican Party behind the auti-slav- erj movement will do it. The liquor in terests are thoroughly organized. We cannot successfully meet them without as thorough organization. A political party is the only thing that will do the work. For the same reason that neither the Whig nor the Democratic Partv could not successfuly espouse the anti slavery cause, the republican nor the democratic party can not espouse the prohibition cause. It would be suicidal for either to do it. In the same issue you quote Mr. Brumby representing the Blodget Co’s, interests in timber lands. While the Beals bill was pending you kindly gave me space to offer what seemed to me to a serious objection of the bill. It was that the large interests having bought their holdings on the estimate of cruisers who by instruction of their employers cruised it “safe.” The holder of small lots (the homesteader and the purchaser) under the stone and timber act of not over 160 acres) being in the market to sell would naturally estimate his at something near what was on it These estimates would be given the Assessor by the owners. Any one can readily see that the result would bt that the homesteader and the purchaser un der the stone and timber act would pin taxes way out of proportion, while th» lumber barons would go nearly scot free. An excessive taxation would force the I small bolder to sell for what ever the | barons might be willing togiye. I for one think the method now being used by far the most equitable for finding out the amount and value for taxation of the timber lands. I cruised timber lands in Michigan and agree with Mr. Brumby that the time given for the work in Till amook County is entirely too short. N H. C ulver .
