Boycotts Declared Unlawful A decision applying to the entire country in that rendered December 17 by Justice Gould in the Supreme Court of the declaring boycotts to be illegal is binding upon all persons comprised in its terms. including indi vidual members of the American Fed eration of Labor w herever they reside, and all other persons acting in can cert with them. In the suit referred' to the Buck Stove and Range Com pany of St. Louis asked an injunction ■gainst the American Federation of Ijibor, alleging unlawful combination and conspiracy on the part of the de fendants and others associated with them to destroy the plaintiff's business by means of a boycott. In granting the injunction the court defined a boy cott to be "a combination of many to cause a loss to one person by coercing others against their will to withdraw from him their beneficial business in tercourse through threats that, unlesB others do so the many will cause seri ous loss to them." It is important for all citizens to realize that It is a criminal offense under the statutes of the United States, punishable by imprisonment in the Penitentiary, for not more than three years, for any two or more per. sons anywhere in tliis country to con. spire together to evade or defeat this decision by committing any of the sets prohibited by it, and that they are lia ble to prosecution therefor by tlie fed eral authorities, whose duty it is to protect the United States Courts against all attempts to defeat the course of justice as pointed out in their decisions. In a word, a boycott anywhere in the United States is a violation of the law, subject to prose cution in any United States Court. The idea that the decision applies only to the District of Columbia is a mistake. It essentially touches every citizen in every state, and prosecutions under it can occur in any part of thecouutry. It * * It is pointed out that if each inhnbi- taut of the United States will save 5 cents a day for one year the total will be $ 1,551.250.000. As Homebody would have to pay for the children it might be necessity to call on old bachelors to make up the deficit at the end of the year. * * ft The United States Lile Saving Service, after a careful test, has demonstrated the efficiency of the power lifeboat in rescuing persons from wricked vessels, and has arranged for the addition of sev eral of these boats to the equipment of the life-saving service along theNew Eng laud coast. * * * A man at Richland, State of Wash ingtori, claims to lie making an average of $4.15 a day from less than 50(1 hens. It taken good generalship to manage so large a flock, but the strictly fresh egg is advancing all the time in the estima tion of consumers. * * * Elaborate plans are being made by the farmers of Missouri, Kansas and Arkansas for the regular January wolf hunts. It must be very exasperating to the president to have these festivities going on at a time when it is impossible for him to get away from the capital. ft * * It has been decided that the width of the Panama Canal shall remain at 100 feet, which is greater than that of any existing ship. If the sea is to be filled with bigger leviathans, Uncle Sum will agree to enlarge the canal. * a a [TO EDITOR OF TILLAMOOK HKADUGHT ] D ear S ih .— Mr. Chase made the state ment in the city council meeting that I had tried to get into office here several times and could not be elected on mv own merits. I wish to state that I have never tried to get office. 1 permitted the law abiding citizens to run me for city marshal four vears ago. Now I wish to say to Mr. Chase that I never paid a fine of $100 for making a gambling joint out of my own residence. If Mr.Chase thinks these are the merits required for election I am glad that 1 a tn not eligible for elec tion. And I wish also to say that it was improper for the mayor elect to jump onto an officer for doing his duty, telling him that be would not be marshal only a short time longer. Later Mr. [ohhscn came to me and said that I was the man for night watchman ; that they elected Zimmerman for spite and that hedid not have any backbone. Mr. Johnson shook hands with me the next day after I was appointed night watchman, saying he hoped we would get along all right; that he would treat me right and he hoped I would do the same. I told him that 1 did not take spite out on anyone, but just tried to do my duty, but the next Mr. Johnson informed me he would not sign the warrants for rnv salary until the supreme court of Oregon compelled him to do so. I did not 6eek the office of nightwatchman. A number of business men wanted me for the position was the reason 1 consented to serve, and while I was special policeman I did my duty, no matter who did wrong, first advising those who were in the habit of drinking too much to go home. Another thing, 1 was not found in StephaUs pool room, playing'pool at night, as Zimmerman was when he was night watchman, but was out doing my duty as special police man and night watchman. I will let the people judge as to the merits in the N. J. M yers . case.
