Last Sunday morning about 9 o’clock
the people of Tillamook City were
startled by the alarm of the fire bell
Rushing to the scene of the fire they sa*
the Tillamook Lumljer Company's mill
all aflame. It was evident from the
start that the plant could not be saved,
and so the attention of the fire depart
ment, which had responded promptly,
and those of the citizens who were
minded to lend their assistance were
directed toward saving the surrounding
property. This for a lime was seriously
endangered owing to the fierceness oi
the fire from the mill. At one time the
pressure from the water mains seemed
to be very low and the canse was found
to be in a pipe that led from the
hydrant opposite the mill to the boiler
room that had been broken off and was
letting the water escape. Chief Cren­
shaw discovered the fault and had this
connection shut off and the water
pressure was regained full force Had
this happened earlier in the fire it is
probable that several more buildings
would have burned despite the faithful
rfforts of the fire department.
How the fire originated seems to be a
mystery.
The night-watchman. .Mr
Gray, had gone home at his usual time,
a little after 6 o'clock in the morning
and no sign ota fire was noticed at that
time and in fess than three hours and a
half the mill was burnt down. Mr.
Gray and the city nightwatch, Mr. Zim­
merman had put out fires in the mill
twice before, that would have burned
the mill down had their been five minu­
tes start. As the mill was quite old, a
great deal ot saw dust had accumulated
under the mill, and a fire originating in
it might smoulder for several days with­
out being noticed.
The Tiillamook Lumber Company has
had a var-ed exist a nee It was origi­
nally built by Smith & Barker and then
passed into the hands of L. Crenshaw,
and finally into the hands of Whitehou»e
A Beals, the present owners. Mr. Beals
has been a member of the firm about
two years.
It is hard to estimate the loss to Tilla­
mook City caused by the mill burning
at this time. Building operations were
extensively planned over the entire city,
and while the materia) can be supplied
from the Hobsonville and Yellow Fir
mills, the distance of these mills from
the city will undoubtedly canse some
delay in getting material. The Tilla­
mook Lumber Company had been doing
a fine business the past two years and
had a nice contract ahead of them, and
the fire makes it a serious loss to them.
Their loss will exceed $20.900 and is
only partially covered by insurance in
the sum of $5000. That their loss is
greater by not being able to fill thrir
railroad contract and losing their elec­
tric light patronage is readily seen.
Tillamook City is now in total darkness
all the street lights being out until the
electric light plant can be rebuilt. The
citizens have to resort to tne use of the
old coal lamps.
Quite a number of men will be thrown
out of imployment by the burning of the
mill but it is hoped that the mill will lie
rebuilt at once and that all these men
will be employed in the rebuilding opera­
tions. Tillamook City can ill-aflbrd to
lose an institution of such importance
and it would not be amiss if the citizens
came to the front with a good liberal
bonus to help re establish the Tillamook
Lumber Company again.

Lyda's sum will, one of the best equipped
plants in the state, located four miles
northeast of here, was completely de
stroyed by fire last night. It was valu­
ed al about $10,000, with $3,000 insur­
ance. There was no fire at the mill
yesterday during the day. and the fire
did not start until about 10 o'clock in
the night, so the owner is certain
that the mill was set on fire. This is the
third sawmill Mr. Lyda has lost by fire
the past eight years. Three years ago

here, he had another one destroyed to
gether with a large amount of lumber,
neither ot which were insured.
Frank Rofolon. the engineer at the mill
says he burned the fire all nut and wet
down around the boiler and engine-room
